A popular female TV celebrity from Germany is creating a heated debate, if not controversy, with her book that apparently focused on the less than glamorous side of the Korean society.
Vera Hohleiter, a panel member of the popular KBS2 TV show, Chat With Beauties ? also called Misuda?published a book in Germany, apparently highlighting her negative experience in Korea.
In the TV program, Hohleiter said on a number of occasions that she fell in love with Korea. Her book, however, indicates otherwise, according to a South Korean blogger who lives in Germany and read the book. .....
...The 29-year-old German also said, Koreans have a bad taste for gossiping about foreigners. When they spot them in a public place such as in the subway, they delve into a very detailed criticism of their appearance and do it in a loud voice.
In the book, Hohleiter complained that Korea is a difficult place for a vegetarian to live, how her Korean boyfriend doesnt pay enough attention to her, and that the crowded Korean subway reminded her of a group of mice, packed in a small space.
As for her TV remarks, she said a half of them were pre-written by a writer. You just memorize and regurgitate what is already scripted during the show, she said. |
The hilarity is that I would say this is all VERY TRUE! And I'm not at all surprised about the TV show being prompted... happened to me when I was a part of a news story for KBS! Honestly, though... what she wrote isn't that horrible. |

Based on her comments in the book she does come off as being overly negative, narrow minded, and makes very broad generalizations some of which border on racist. I feel sorry for Germans who have her as the German "representation" in Korea. She's like the German version of Paris Hilton.

Korean girls are obsessed with keeping up with the popular trend of time and therefore they predominantly wear mini-skirts. But then, when they walk up the stairways in the subway station, they make every possible pretentious effort to hide their exposed bodies. I dont understand why they even wear mini-skirts from the start. |
Exaggerated, misleading, dramatic, negative.
The reality is girls do not "make every possible pretentious effort to hide their exposed bodies". What they do is put their purse/shopping bag behind their butt so that they're not exposing their panties to people below. That's not "pretentious" or "making every possible effort"...that's just common decency and manners.

How is Korea difficult for a vegetarian? I think it's quite easy, much easier than many other countries. I can name at least 20 different dishes (not including the 100's of side dishes) that are vegetarian. How does a crowded subway reflect or say ANYTHING about Korea? That it has a high population density? So does Japan, so does New York, so does a ton of other countries. She's a tool and it's ignorant people like her that are in the public eye that give "foreigners" a bad name in Korea. |

Oh gawd.... don't pull the race card.
It seems anything that even lightly ruffles the feathers is most certainly racially motivated. |

Seems like pretty tame stuff. But in this internet age there will always be 10,000 people who get in a snit over anything published anywhere.
If she's the same German girl that I've noticed on Misuda then she's one of the stronger Korean speakers...but I guess if it's mostly scripted then that's an illusion. |

The crowded Subway comment is a little stupid. So is the miniskirt one, although I think she is trying to make the point that they are so worried about showing off certain parts of their bodies but love to show off as much leg as possible. Probably because they're their best assets.
The part about Korean's bad mouthing foriegners on the subway is true. I've heard it from many sources being a teacher you see they learn it from an early age and many never quite give it up. It's shallow and more racist than any of the German girl's observations. I know a vegetarian here, and it's difficult for her to find a decent vegetarian meal. (despite what mr.knowitall says) especially if you don't read korean and know all the meals. You can't tell by the pictures, and they love sprinkling dashida in many dishes that appear to be vegetarian.
The part about the Korean boyfriend not paying enough attention to her is hilarious, it could mean a few things. |

Of course, one can hardly believe that a Korean blogger legitimately read the book and considered it in its full context, or that she thought for two seconds that the words of a foreigner could be believed Rather, she probably picked out the few words she understood to be negative from some extensive dictionary work, and then called in the cavalry. |
It's a surprise to see Korean bloggers get so bent out of shape about a foreigner's opinion of their pristine homeland. |

generalizations never help anyone make their case.
Everyday I see girls with skirts too short trying to make their way up the subway steps, but they're not contorting themselves or doing anything ridiculous, just tucking their purse or bag behind them, or if they're with a friend, walking in front of the friend.
However in the same day I see plenty of girls wearing jeans, sweatpants, shorts, etc. For all the value of her claim that all korean girls are running around in mini-skirts, I could equally claim that all korean girls are running around in long jeans in the august heat.
Whether or not we want to quibble over calling it racist, is immaterial. It doesn't change what it is. Its racism, ethnic prejudice, bigotry, etc. its a label that all means hate for no other reason than hate itself.
Negative generalizations are born out of hate, ignorance and a mind that cannot separate the individual from the group. She's just another in a long line of people who seem to have a serious problem with that.

Hohleiter said in her web blog that there was some misunderstanding as well as distortion added when the contents of her book were translated from German to Korean. |
I'm sure she'll be going into politics next. We've heard it those words a thousand times and I don't know yet that I've ever seen a genuine misunderstanding or a translation problem.
I'm going to bet she expected that no one in Korea would ever find out about her book and she just had to get her pent up frustrations out and couldn't find a better outlet.
People have a tendency to take a single issue with an individual, project it onto a group and from there it starts. We see it everyday here on Dave's. |

Didn' t this silly woman slag off expat blokes - saying that they were generally losers who had an elevated position in Korean society that they didn't deserve?
The fact that she was in a tv programme about beauties tells me that ugly white women also have an elevated position in Korean society that they don't deserve!
Misuda is a horrible 'Uncle Tom' show - full of silly women selling their soul for 30 pieces of silver and fame in a land far away from their own. |

Ive heard Koreans slag off other people, cultures and countries all the time whilst making stark generalisations as well, in fact probably in every country where I have seen Koreans in i have observed this.
Nothing new here apart from the fact the shoe is on the other foot. It's normally Koreans that have license to say what they want whilst ever last word spoken by a foreigner is taken as a set in stone criticism.
Seems like the proverbial sword that cuts both ways: something a lot, not all, but a lot of Koreans need to understand.

The bottom line is very much of what she said is true. But what purpose does it serve to announce it in a book?
She's a greedy opportunist hypocrite.
That's *opportunistic for the grammar gestapo. |

It is pretentious how they cover any flesh. Another thing is how they cover their cleavage especially if there's a foreigner around. As if I'm anymore leerish than the average Korean guy. It's a "mind says no, heart says yes thing I think".
What gets me though is the Kraut slapper wrote a book? Like, a print book? And people would buy it?? |

She did say that their responses were scripted- they said what the producers wanted them to say.
If that is true, if the and things they said about foreigners was scripted, then I am glad she wrote the book!!!!!!!!! I hope she will be on a lot of talk shows in Germany.
This reminds me a little of the textbook in Singapore that the Korean government was so upset about because it had a picture of a Korean homeless person. |
