My Co-teacher is insisting I use one of my vacation days (8hrs) vacation time for the School's Birthday. I was told no one would be at school on that day including the teachers, but it is not considered a holiday so I have to use my vacation time for it. I asked other Native Teachers in the area, and they got the day off as a holiday, and werent required to take their vacation time. Thanks again.

Every year so far at my public school, everyone--Korean teachers, administrators, other support staff, students, and I--has gotten the school's birthday off (actually, we got the closest Friday or Monday off, whichever it was that generated a 3-day weekend) without it being charged against a holiday. What we do have to do, though, is complete the "preparing lessons/materials at home" form.

Here's an idea. If she continues to insist that you take vacation time, tell her that you're not taking vacation time and that you will be in the office for the entire eight hours, obviously requiring your supervisor (aforementioned co-teacher) to be there also. See how that changes her perspective!

I got the day off no questions asked. Tell her you are willing to work that day instead of using a vacation day. Or just tell her anything that makes sense that she shouldn't be milking a vacation day out of you.

I have known many people that have worked at public schools and this is the first time i have ever heard of this.

There is NO WAY you should be using a vacation day for that. Nip it in the bud quick.

Everyone gets the school`s birthday off (as a free day). She is trying to scam you of vacation days.

Read your contract (and don't be bluffed)... your idiot-stick co-teacher will back down when it becomes apparent you have a spine. Cool

Just say no. The school's "birthday" does not count against your vacation time. There probably is nothing in your contract about it but nearly 100% of schools in SK celebrate the school's b-day by taking the day off OR having some fun events planned for the day.

Just tell your handler NO.

Do nothing. When the B-day comes around then call your handler and say "I'm at school...where is everyone?"

Make her come in. Force her to. She'll get the hint next time.
