I finished my awful contract in Daejeon and have since moved up to Seoul. My boss is refusing to pay my "round trip" plane ticket since I didn't leave the country. Well I want to fight him for that and other things. I now live in Seoul so I would have to travel back and forth, so I want to know - is it worth it? Is it likely that I will win or will it just be a waste of time and money? Also, do I have to bring someone with me that speaks Korean? |

i finished my first contract at a hagwon in daejeon in 06. i was only the 3rd FT to make it thru the whole year at the time at that hagwon. i extended my contract and stayed an additional 4-6 days after my contract to help out the school until my replacement arrived.
had a mishap at the airport flying home (which they blamed on me) and cost me an addtional $275 out of my pocket. they ripped me off about $500-600 on my severence for damages to the apt. (i expected some money for damages...but not that much). they didnt even write me a letter of recommendation that they promised.
yeah...i was pissed. but what could i do? i was a newbie and was already back in my home country. left a bad taste in my mouth.
but after i left: 1 co-worker did a midnight run...my replacement was fired after his 10th month and took her to labor board.
my director had a BIG reputation around the city as being a crazy and dangerous boss lady.
about 2 weeks before the court date...she vanished. then a couple days before the court date, she was reported dead. under 'suspicious' circumstances.
my director was c-r-a-z-y but for the most part she was good to me. she did the dirty on a bunch of foreign teachers and i did want her to get what she had coming...but not that way.
sometimes things work themselves out. |

Try and get a ssettlement. Use a Korean arbitrator. If it goes to court the chances of having it settled in your favor are about as likely as you winning the Albanian lottery. |
