I just completed my first year as a SMOE employee. It was a great year and experience. I renewed my contract a few months ago so I'm due to get my completion bonus and raise. I was looking forward to another year until I visisted home (NYC) a couple of weeks ago. I found out I miss home and my mom is really sick, so I think it's best that I go home early.
I'm planning to stick it out another 6 months so that I can complete the fall semester and I don't have to pay for being flown to Korea by my job. Will there be a negative impact on me notifying my employer with adequate notice (30 days I believe) that I want to go back to the U.S.? I want to be able to use this job as a reference. I'm planning to tell SMOE that my mother is really sick and I want to care for her, which is true. I also want to get an ESL job in the New York area when I get there though I guess that's another topic altogether. |

almost definitely, yes. most employers will be deeply and personally offended if you give notice. you will likely see your work conditions deteriorate and feel a noticeable chill when interacting with your co-workers (mostly superiors). it may or may not create issues with pay or early termination as retaliation. |

So you're saying I should wait 6 months and then give them a month's notice? My co-workers and school staff are great by the way so I doubt they'd act maliciously. |

I'm not sure if this is widely known but SMOE has been known to give 6 month extensions to teachers. Maybe you can go to SMOE and ask them about changing your 1 year renewal into a 6 month extension. I not certain on the details since the person I know who did it, agreed upon the extension before signing any renewal. I do remember that she didn't get a raise and the vacation issue was cloudy. |

Thanks for the info. If I would have known beforehand that this is an option, I would have considered it. I sent an email to SMOE and am awaiting a response. I guess it's worth a try! |

SMOE will probably shoot you down on the 6 month extension. It is a very RARE occurence that a teacher is allowed just a 6 month extension. SMOE will cite the usual BS answers like "We can't renew your visa for just 6 months... blah blah blah....".
OP, if I were you I would work the 5 months, and then give your school 30 days. If you and your school are on very good terms, then I would explain the situation to your VP or principal and give them a heads up so they know they need to find a new native teacher in 6 months.
Otherwise, I would keep mum about it. If you tell them now and the school is hostile to the idea of you leaving 6 months early, then you are in for a LONG 6 months at the school. |

I agree. There is basically only 4 months of school, Sept. to Dec. plus 3 weeks of "camp" in Jan. Tell them at that time. Feb. is just good-bye time in general. Never understood that time actually...5 weeks off just to show up for a week or two and back on holiday again. So, I would tell them in January. No worries. |

That's what I'm planning to do come Jan/Feb. Unless I decide to complete the contractby then. But I guess time will tell. |
