I brought my prepaid phone (from Korea) back to the U.S. with me - turned out I needed it up to the last minute so I didn't sell it - it's very nice, a slider-style, chrome, camera phone also (with video), works fine.
you will use the SK Telecom service, you can buy minutes at any SK store, if you are on a tourist visa you'll have to renew it every time you renew your visa; if you have an E2 or other visa, same thing, SK monitors those things now.
in general on domestic calls you get about 30 minutes or so for 10,000 won.
it does also work on international calls
the number on it expired earlier this month (August) so you'll get a new number for it.
$40 and you're good to go - I'm in Berkeley, btw.
