One of my friends that came to visit me has been staying here on a tourist visa. He's put his name out there to look for an English teaching job, and just a few days ago he got an email from a school here that was interested. I thought I'd try to gather some advice from y'all that can hopefully help him out.
How exactly would he go about applying for a teaching visa while in South Korea on a teaching visa? From what I've heard (when I got my visa) you have to apply from outside of SK. Is there some way to apply while in the country?

It depends on how you are using the word "apply":

You can look for a job and submit all the paperwork to the school in Korea. When they have everything ready to sponsor the E2 teaching visa, you have to fly to Japan (or other third nation) to get it.

There is some question this year --- because of the new interview thing --- about whether you have to return to your home country to do the visa application and interview at the nearest consulate there --- or whether the interview, if you have to have one, can be done at a consulate or the embassy in Japan.

I have seen nothing so far that gives me a definitive answer on that last part.

The tourist-visa-to-E2-visa option was commonly done the last time I was paying attention to Dave's ESL Cafe --- which was around 2002 - and my last experience in the hakwon industry was early 2000.

Why would he need to apply for something he already has? Laughing

Seems like a typo given the first sentence...

UPDATE

I just found out from my friend that the school which offered him the job is owned by a church. Since the actually owner is a church, do you think he'd be able to stay here working on a D-6 (religious worker) visa?
