Ok, so my friend is trying to decide whether to come and one of the main questions of his is whether or not we retain our state residency.

He is going for his PhD after Korea and if he loses residency then he'll have to pay a lot more in tuition. But if we retain our state residency he can go back to the U of M and pay as a resident when he's done in Korea.

Does anyone know about this? Thanks in advance!!

Tony

Each state has different residency requirements. You need to check with the state.

Correct. However, whatever the rules are, it is not really possible for any state to verify if you are in or out of the country. As long as you keep bills coming to your home address and keep your driver's license or ID card current, it is like you never left. Well, unless you report your overseas income to the IRS. Most people in Korea do not do that.
