Hey, not a newb question, just a reclarification because of an email I got from footprints....
I was told, and read many times, that I can get a local background check and have that apostilled for Korea, although recently footprints told me they are beginning to give local background checks a hard time and are only accepting statewide checks... does anyone know if this is true who has done it recently? Have you done only a local check and have that work for you in the last couple months? Thanks.

Hi JasperTeach,

This is Will from Footprints, and I am just hoping to clarify things for you. Up until a few weeks ago, we were operating under the impression that local level background checks were fine. The reason for this is that information on the immigration websites indicated that it would be fine.

At some point in June, immigration in Korea changed this policy, and wanted state level background checks, and also mentioned that online checks were no longer acceptable. We had a few people in the pipeline who had to turn around and do the background check all over again.

You will most certainly find people on Dave's and in Korea who have gone through the process using a local background check. In fact, there might still be people who have been able to squeeze through for one reason or another. However, we strongly urge you (and everyone else) to get a state level background check done.

If you have any additional questions - touch base with us at [email protected]

-Will at Footprints

I had this problem just two weeks ago--I had a local check done, sent to Korea, and got a call from my school that said that immigration was not accepting those anymore and would need at least a state background check. Rolling Eyes

People working in Korea should enjoy this loophole while it lasts. Someday a pissed-off teacher who is forced out of Korea for some stupid minor shit he did back in the day will 'enlighten' immigration about this. FBI checks for ALL will soon follow. There are lots of people working in Korea who have skeletons in their closets but are able to stay and work because of this loophole, not to mention they are 'liked'. If the wrong person is forced out, he may lobby immy for changes.

I wonder if anyone realizes precisely how long a FBI CRC actually takes in the US. 6-8 weeks is what I was quoted, and that's for my own.

When people mention things about checks, I think they should note what circumstances they are referring to.

A) New E-2 visa coming over from the US
B) E-2 visa holder continuing at the same school
C) E-2 visa holder transferring current visa to another public school
D) E-2 visa holder transferring current visa to another hagwon
E) A switch in C or D (public to hagwon, hagwon to public)

One person noted they got a state level check and was rejected. However, they got another check just online and took it to US Embassy and signed an affidavit. That one was accepted.

I have my CBC. I took it, made a copy, and got it notarized. Tomorrow, I'll be going down to the DOJ to get that apostilled.

It's a state CBC. Is this going to work?

Ah, I remember my other question. On the CBC application it asked if this was for 'personal' use or for a 'visa/immigration' use. I selected the visa option. I guess I just want some reassurance that I'm doing everything correctly. Am I?!

There is no FBI outside of the US. Interpol perhaps?

OP: I'd get a state/province Criminal BG Check. I assume you're Canadian? I'd start with a Vulnerable Sector Background Check at your local police station. Or:

I've been told by an FBI office it takes about three weeks to get one. Someday the Koreans are going to catch on.

As far as GEPIK is concerned, only state level is accepted.

For people in California, go to a live scan place. If you do not have a record, you should be getting the CBC within a week.
