From the Korean Herald:

Quote:
Gambling addicts are asking to be banned from the casinos they frequent. As of the end of July, a total of 1,740 people asked the Kangwon Land Casino this year to prohibit their entrance in the future, according to the affiliated High 1 entertainment resort in Jeongseon, Gangwon Province, yesterday.

This number alone is more than 78 percent of last year's figure and the resort expects the number to reach 3,000 by the end of the year.

The number of those who had themselves barred from casinos increased from 806 in 2005 to 1,005 in 2006, 1,495 in 2007, and 2,209 last year.

The self-banners are prohibited from entering the casino for six months and are offered traveling expenses back home, according to the resort.

This year a total of 813 people have returned home this way. The number was 823 last year.

"The government has stepped up the investigation on illegal loan businesses which, in the past, enabled gambling addicts to stay for weeks and months in the casino," said a resort employee.

Also, the ongoing economic slump has elevated the public awareness on the dangers of gambling addiction, he said.

"Society has generally come to agree that gambling addiction is a social evil," said Choi Dong-yeol, director of the Korea Prevention and Cure Center for Gambling Problem.
