I am thinking about getting a new latop (the old POS Dell is kicking the bucket) and was wondering what you would recommend. I don't need something super expensive or high tech- just something for downloading and taking online classes in the future.

Anyway- not sure where to start so I thought I'd ask around. I skimmed through the laptops in Korea section- but it seems to be about getting them to work in Korea and America.

I'm a PC person- but not entirely opposed to a Mac.

it depends on your needs. is it for work, entertainment, games, etc?

I imagine the most demanding thing you'd need it for would be maybe some HD video now and then.

Just try to get a Core 2 Duo of 2.0ghz or more......and for the downloading, you'll want as big a hard drive as possible. 500GB is becoming common in laptops.

Don't worry too much about brand name. They all use the same internal parts anyway.

Will you want the OS in English?

Its just going to be mostly for taking courses online I'd say.

Yes- I want the OS (assume that is operating system) in English.

I meant the "laptops in korea" sticky at the top of the technology form.

And lastly- no I won't be going home anytime soon, nor do I know anyone who knows much about computers Sad

But even in the states I don't know anyone to ask about computer stuff.

I guess ordering online would be an option- but I still don't know what to look for.

I'm in the market too. Coupla questions:

At Yongsan is there any particular building which has a lot of laptops? Should I go in the mall in the station, or that gigabyte building, or ET Land.. or.. doesn't matter because they all sell the same? Or does anyone know of any sales on at the moment in Emart, Costco, Homeplus etc?

I have an old laptop which I killed by pouring a pint of water on to it. I suspect the HD might be OK though. If I take it apart and remove the hard drive can I get an external case for a notebook sized hard drive? I want to retrieve the photos I have stored on there and might as well use it as an external hard drive if I can..

Last week I helped a friend get a nice laptop, its an ASUS, with nice specs.

2.2Ghz Core 2 Duo
3GB RAM
320GHD
15.4' screen

And it was W900,000 cash. And 2 year international warrenty.

Unortunatel I cant remember the model number but anyway... its a good gauge on what to get for your money.

The notebook I was most happy with was my lenovo. I sold it a while back so that I could get a new notebook I could play new games on, and I've regretted that decision ever since. They're pretty well built and seem to run smoothly. I had one with a 1.83ghz pentium M and 512mb ram, and it booted with windows xp in under 5 seconds. My toshiba with 2 gigs of ram and a 2.5ghz duo core processor booted in about a minute.

They also stay very cool. Never had any problems with it.
