|
|
About 6 months ago, when I first started at my school, another teacher asked me for a bunch of information like my birthday, passport number, teaching experience, etc., and put it into an internet database. He said it was so my school could leave references about me and so on. He said it's an internet database for all foreign teachers in Korea.
Like a fool, I gave him all my information, and now I'm probably on this database. It's not that I'm worried I'll get a negative reference, but the more I think about it this is feeling like a real invasion of privacy.
And the people at my school are petty, petty people. I follow the rules and do a great job in the classroom, get good performance reviews, but it concerns me that they could up and leave a bad reference because I didn't bow to someone in the hall one day.
Additionally, I don't even know what the website or database or whatever he put my information into is!
Can someone please help me locate this? I tried a google search, but to no avail.
I'm really concerned and would like to be removed from it.
Thanks. |

It depends how far you want to take it. Most likely if you question the teacher that entered the information, they will fudge it and not give you any useable information, but I think that is a good place to start. Next, you could call the Ministry of Labor and discuss your concerns about having your information publicly available as an infringement of your right to privacy. I'd be interested to know what they tell you. Next, you could write a letter to the head of your school expressing your concern. I suppose the outcome of that would depend on what sort of rapport you have with that person and what their attitude towards foreigners' right to privacy is.
Keep us posted.

Why not try a Naver search? |
Why not ask the teacher who initially asked for the info in the first place? |

Sounds like the OP's at a public school. The "handler" is supposed to enroll the GET into the NEIS (National Education Information System) as all the Korean teachers and students are. The idea is good; however, the implementation is shot. If it worked, you would not have to chase down your vice-principal or principal to get his signature on requests for special leave, you could print out some things from your record (I think your pay statement is one of those). The problem is, the site freezes up every time when I try to log-in. The other problem is you can only use it from computers onto which you've downloaded the authentication program. |
