or any other fictional portrayal of people being lost at sea/stranded on an island.
Why is water always an issue? I know you can't drink sea water, but why doesn't anybody grab something like a couple of bottles and a spoon and distill sea water. Boil the water, condense the vapor, problem solved. Not that I should have expected any common sense from Water World, but surely this would be a preferable solution to recycling urine. |

It was a Kevin Costner movie so what do you expect? |

Water was never really much of an issue in Lost. They found a spring early in season 1 I believe.
That being said, I'm not sure desalination is as easy as you think. |

It is that easy. If you can make fire you can make drinkable water from the sea. It's a matter of catching the steam which is quite easy when you know what to do. |

Here's one simple method of doing this:

The idea I was thinking of is a bit more wasteful, but faster. If this was Lost, Find two pots, or if there are no pots in the plane wreckage, fashion them out of wreckage or sinks from the bathrooms. Fill the larger of the "pots" with sea water and place over a fire. Take a large strip of metal from the plane and prop up one end over the pot filled with sea water and the other end in the second pot. Make sure the strip of metal tilts down towards the second pot, and you're ready to go. |

Put a cup in an inch or two (you don't want it to fall over) of seawater in the bottom of a tub or bucket. Stretch a plastic bag over the top and place a pebble on it directly over the cup so the bag makes an inverted cone with it's apex above the cup. Wait, or heat for quicker results. The water will evaporate, condense on the bag and drip into the cup. Voila! Fresh water from sea water. |
