There is a "student" sitting in the teachers office right now and I was told by my co-teacher that he is 27 or 28 years old. He never completed middle school and has joined my school this semester as a third grade student. How is this even legal? How can you put someone of that age in a class with female students?

Some pop star never graduated from high school and had to go back to his 3rd year and get his diploma. He was like...24 or something at the time.

Last time I checked teachers were that age and in class with female students.

It would be very disruptive to class. They should have something to give him (a diploma) to say he finished middle school without going.

How can you draw the comparison between a teacher and a 27 year old dropout? Even if the guy hasn't been in jail/prison, I would not want my son or daughter in class with someone 10+ years older than them and a questionable background.

just wondering, is this an all girls school?

I know there runs the risk of someone like that being a pedophile... but they take that risk when the hire just about anyone, especially teachers.

There's no reason to suspect that just because an adult is in the classroom that something will happen.

Not every adult is a pedophile, and we can't suspect that every older male is.

Although, I do think it's at least reasonable to have that concern about it. I mean, you can never be too careful. The thing is though, I doubt he will have opportunities to do anything. I figure most of the kids will avoid him like the plague anyways.

How uncool he is. Probably doesn't even know about pokemon....

Remember we are in another country. What may be illegal in our country may not be here. I wish people would have open minds when visiting or working in other cultures. But I find that many people don't.

He probably didn't finish school because his family was destitute or something. It's not like the school will let anyone in unless there was an exceptional circumstance. All these ajumma-mentality is totally unbecoming of university graduates.

OP - you are one narrow minded tosser - do you not think for one moment that this person who has shown guts in wanting to improve themselves though education is not nervous as it is having to go through this route?

Unlike our countries, there doesn't seem to be a system in Korea where adults can get further educational qualifications through night classes - this is the only way in Korea or so it seems.

I went back to school without a damn qualification at 31 years old, my dad was a 70 year old university freshman!

Education is not a preserve of the young. You should be applauding this person for showing some guts and some initiative in taking their self improvement through the route of the education.

But you can't do that which says plenty about you as a so called 'educator'

I wish this person came through my school where I would have treated them with uptmost respect.

I'm not sure about middle school, but a high school student I teach just passed the Korean version of the GED exam.

For all those bashing me, would you want your middle school son or daugheter in class with someone that old? I don't know about the guys background, but it seems like he would be a big distraction. I would have thought that there are other ways to pursue your education instead of this kind of route

I agree. The trouble is that it's middle school, not a Korean university. Wink

It may come as a surprise, but education is not the preserve of the young. If the Korean athorities allow older students in class - it's none of our business.

Korea has had a tragic history. This 'student' may have had to leave school to help his family survive - and I mean survive. But now, as an adult, he can't lift his head up in society because he didn't finish school. Surely you must know that education defines your status and level of self-worth in Korean culture and psych.

Who are we to question this person's motives for returning to education?

Frankly, I'm surprise Korean doesn't have more adult students. My country does.

Honestly, I can't say I'd particularly care. It's not like he's going to be taking the kids on field trips or something, what do you think is going to happen?
