A friend of mine who got an E-2 visa couple years ago wants to return. Is it still possible to just show up and make a Japan visa run when you find a job? Was it grandfathered in for those who have done it before? Thanks.

The interviews are for people who have never had an E-2 before. Your friend will be fine in that case. Right now the job market is really tight, and there are plenty of people posting who are having trouble finding jobs. That might be something your friend has to take in consideration. How long can they last without a job. If they need a job as soon as they get here, I wouldnt' suggest it. But if he can stay with you and has some cash saved, sure.
