Hi,

I have a question. I've recently heard that South Korea's health ministry has put out a new mandate for teachers and those that work at schools, that for everyone who has travelled outside the country and returns, can not return to work for 7 days.

Can anybody confirm this for me? Or can point me to an article where this is stated?

Please let me know,

Thanks

Can't point to an article, but all teachers returning from overseas at my university had to wait 7 days before returning to work.

Administration said it would have to be made up later. Funny thing is, the semester is over before Christmas. There is no later.

Those teachers just got an extra week off basically...paid.

The ETIS Website for SMOE states that all teachers must stay at home for one week upon returning from overseas... Paid, don't have to make up classes, no lost sick days or holiday time. Finally something they havn't screwed us over on this year Wink

H1N1 is real, but for many Asians it seems like an extension of xenophobia. All the face masks for people who work in professions around foreigners, the 7-day day wait you mention, all of these are precautions. But I wonder if we would really have all of these strict precautions without the xenophobia. It's just the flu, but it's seen as a foreign invader.

It's true. One of the Korean teachers at my school went to China. She had to wait seven days before coming back.

You're wrong on this one.

I don't think there's anything official from the Ministry of Health; however, I returned last night from a month-long, out-of-country vacation and my PS has told me not to come to work for seven days i.e. an extra week of paid 'vacation'/'quarantine'... I just can't leave K-land. Very Happy

I believe this more a policy of the the Ministry of Education than the Ministry of Health.

I didn't get any quarantine the vacation that I took this month.

I passed the through the flu screen at the airport with flying colors and noone at the airport or my school alerted me of the homestay period. I returned 7 days ago and came to school no questions asked.

did the temp at the airport on my way back from Europe yesterday and was told of this "stipulation" today. Talked with the principle and he is getting me to go get my temp at the hospital today and rest. Talk about it tomorrow.

Yes,
technically you are supposed to wait 7 days before returning to work as per the Ministry of Health or something along those lines. However, not all schools are aware of or enforcing this. I returned from vacation a couple weeks ago and was teaching again the next day. A friend of mine went home to the States for two weeks and was told to wait for three days before coming back to work.

An extra week off would have been cool, but ultimately I'm glad I came back from vacation seven days before I was supposed to be back at work. It feels more professional. I didn't plan it that way because of the flu, but it worked out well.

I'm in the middle of my extra week off now. School called me the day before I was supposed to be back.

I had to wait 7 days after coming back from my vacation in Japan and never got sick. Lo and behold, three students end up with the flu (never even went abroad) and are 'isolated'. School continues as usual. Rolling Eyes
