Just wanted to get an idea of the ages of English teachers in Korea, without asking directly for folks to post their age.

I wanted to come to Korea when I was just out of university at 22. Now I am 24, and I thought that maybe I was too old to come here.

I know it may sound absurd to many of you older folks here, but I am one of those people who are in a hurry to settle into a career back home. I also think it may be different for us women, as we are generally thinking of our biological clocks(those of us who want children anyway). Gotta get home, get married, and start a family. That's just my thinking anyhow.

I will be 25 when I leave here, and and since arriving I now think that I am not too old to be here. Laughing

Are you ever too old to be doing this kind of work?

i don't want a wife or kids, but i did think 'i have to get out of korea', and i did. however as you can tell by the fact that i'm still posting on this board occasionally a whole TWO YEARS after leaving, i really miss the place.

i was almost 25 when i left korea, and had been there since 21. i taught english for a year, then ended up in corporate type jobs, but still felt i would never actually get anywhere as a foreigner in korea. you can make good money teaching english, or doing whatever, but if you want respect and a sense of career progression, its a really tall order.

as i said though, i do miss korea. in the long run i'd like to go back, but maybe in 5-10 years with my own business. i'll probably get shot down for saying this but if you want to get anywhere, working for others in korea is pretty much a dead end.

I'm 26 now and will be 27 when I leave. How long is it feasible to work as an ESL teacher here? How old are some of the older people you know? I've heard a lot about people who want to stay long-term. Does that mean over 50 years old? What long-term benefits are there for people that stay that long?

And the funny thing is that no one responded to the OP's first post until five years after the fact.
