I'm moving to Anyang on the 1st of September and I wonder if anyone knows of any climbing gyms or any climbing groups or whatever that may be in that area? I imagine that rock climbing would be something that happens in Korea with all the mountains around, I just need to get hooked up with the right people.
Any other comments/suggestions about life in Anyang? I know very little of the city, as the amount of English information out there isn't all that accessible.
Thanks,
-Paul |

Check out AdventureKorea. They occasionally do rock climbing trips around Seoul. Not sure if it's in Anyang or not. That's not a really popular sport here, so you may have to travel some distance to meet others that are into it. If you go on an AdventureKorea rock climbing trip, you will more than likely meet others that do it more regularly. If there is not club, of course you could just start your own. I've never gone before, but I think it's something I'd be interested in.
Let me know if you find out about anything. |

While AK's rockclimbing trip was fun, I wouldn't recommend it for anyone who is a serious rock climber. I did a little rock climbing at school (years ago), and have been to a gym a few times since, and it was not challenging for me at all. I am hardly a seasoned climber. At no point did I feel challenged by the wall, and I only got two climbs for a whole afternoon. In general, AK's trips are great, but not for a real rock climbing experience.
There is a rock climbing website www.koreaontherocks.com and they have a group on facebook. I haven't had anything to do with them, but I believe that this is where you need to go to find out about the ex-pat climbing scene in Korea. |

Google maps says Crux Zone is in Suwon. Is it? What part of town is the Anyang Correctional Service center? |

Korea on the Rocks is probably your very best bet. They have a list of gyms and climbs by area and everyone on the forums are good people. I went out once with some people from there and they were amazing! |

I went to Kim Jong-heon's the other day and it was pretty cool. There was only one guy there who spoke any English and he was incredibly kind. He had me call him "Hyeon" (big brother) and he paid for a cab ride for us to go to an outdoor gear store for me to buy climbing shoes then we went back to the gym and climbed. I'll probably end up there based on that and the fact that the other two climbing gyms are a lot farther away from me. I'd like to check out Crux Zone but I don't know where it is! |
