|

You can hear an interview with Ben Glickman from Footprints recruiting about the recent cancellation of 100 SMOE jobs. Ben talks about what happened, who was affected, what is being done about it, and more. Also, hear Ben discuss rumored changes in the SMOE contract, as well as recent influx of teachers into Korea, and what impact that is having on the job market:

Those are the kind of interviews you should be doing. Good stuff for a change.
Just what I thought. Depression in the west causes flood of teachers. I just hope to God what I think is going to happen doesn't happen.
This place used to be great. There were so few teachers and so many jobs that a guy kind of had some power. |

Thanks bassexpander: Great interviews. My contract is up at the end of October, and I am not extending it either. My ps elementary co-teacher had insinuated last month that I could have more work to do, and less vacation since "getting a job is difficult" nowadays. This comment came on the heals of my struggle to get my entire 7 days vacation for this month. Well, despite how bad the job market is, I am still glad that I haven't extended my contract with this school. Since money is not my primary objective, returning to Taiwan or China sounds rather refreshing at the moment...

Third this motion. Schools are too cocky these days. My conditions went down the tubes this year. Off to Canada. |

I just listened to both your interviews.
There are a couple of questions I was expecting the guy from Footprints to answer, but didn't hear. One was about what they are going to do with the people who bought plane tickets or who showed up in Korea only to find they didn't have jobs. Are they going to be compensating them in any way?
Also, I wonder what this will do to SMOE's reputation as a reputable place to work.
It was interesting listening to your other interview with the teacher too. Although this issue was really off focus, I agree with what both of you were saying about trying to teach something valuable to the kids versus the expectation that you be a dancing bear.
In my opinion the elementary public school curriculum is crap and over the past six months my school was nice enough to let me experiment with developing a new curriculum while keeping segments of the old. While my school was happy with it, we got nothing but loud complaints from the local Office of Education and from other teachers at other schools who criticized us for veering from the prescribed curriculum. So because of that and also because of the fact that my co-teacher is having trouble teaching the split classes on her own in English, we've decided to go back to teaching the crappy curriculum.
It's sad that they don't seem to value real education in the public schools here. |

Well done BE. Asking good questions........you sound like one of us.
Too bad you couldn't pin down someone down from Immigration one day. I mean, the interviews and interviewees are great, but to get someone higher up the food chain would be nice.
Have you ever tried to get Korean organizations / institutions to do interviews?

Thanks guys. I've got it set up rather easily to do quickie interviews about hot topics on Dave's via Skype. So if a hot topic comes up, and I happen to be around, I'm up for an interview with anyone "in the know" about stuff that goes down.
I'll be posting the stewardess interview as soon as I get off of my lazy butt. Had that one for a while, but never finished the final edits. |

Who gives a hoot about Fprints bottom line?! What about the displaced teachers bottom line.
What questions where answered? Nada zilp nothing.
What a complete waste of 17 minutes. I learned absolutely nothing. |
