So, I tried doing a search for this but for some reason everytime I attemped a search the page timed out. =\

Either way, so I was talking with my recruiter today, who by the way is an amazingly nice lady, and we got on the subject of background checks. Apparently it takes about a week for most recruits to get their's back. It took me about 20 minutes, thats when it hit me that it was a local and not a state. The recruiter said it shouldn't be a problem, but I thought I remember hearing that local checks are accepted anymore for immigration. Any truth behind this? Has anyone recently tried for a visa with a local cbc and got denied? How likely is it, if local isn't accepted anymore, for me to "slip through the cracks."

Thanks,
-Alex

Quick little extra: I had the local cbc notarized and then sent to the capital and apostillized. So, even though the local check looked like nothing more then a printed out sheet of paper that said "I was clean," it sure looked damned offical with all of those stamps.

I'm not American but other people have responded to other threads saying it has to be a state level check (Americans, correct me if I'm wrong). If it's anything like the UK across there, it can take up to 2 weeks. As it is, I got mine back within 3 days.

From what I understand, some public schools are still taking local checks, but probably won't be anymore very soon. Private schools need the State checks now. The reason that I think this is that I had a local check done and was issued a visa when I was going to teach with the SMOE a couple weeks ago. After I was dropped, I started looking for private schools, and was told that I would now need a State check, which I'm hoping to start the process for in a few hours. I've been on the phone with several recruiters in the last few weeks, who all tell me that although all my paperwork is finished and apostille notarized, I can't use my local check and will have to get the state one before I get a job. I hope that it only takes a couple weeks at most, because I need a job asap after the SMOE situation.

Depends on the state. If you don't need a fingerprint check (some states give you the option), a lot of states can get it done in like 15 minutes. You need to find out if your state has a BI ((state name here) Bureau of Investigation). They usually can do it for you.
