|
|
Is this fact or fiction?
I'm thinking of taking a weekend trip out of the country for a weekend to visit a friend.
Someone told me that if I leave...immigration will record my flight information, and when I return...that they (immigration or the public health services) will call my school to ask if I'd had any problems with illness.
Is this true or just a rumor people spread? |

Who would know, most institutions and services just follow their own ideas of what the rules are.
Heck-I just got asked for my wedding certificate and milk receipts (wtf??) when trying to open a bank account with my passport and ARC. |

Milk receipts? |
Standard Chartered Je-il Bank wanted to know how I supported myself. They phoned the wife too asking me to bring in my wedding certificate which I certainly will not. I started shouting at the fekking idiots a bit towards the end. They wanted proof of my address so I showed them it on my F2 visa for the tenth time (which got the condescending little laugh).
"It's a government visa, my address is right there! Why are you wasting my time asking for milk receipts. How long have you lived in the city? Have you seen milk delivered?! Huh!?" (I love adding in that little "ajeoshhi "Huh??!!" in sentences)
What they REALLY wanted was a Korean to be vouching for me. Vouching for me when all I wanted was to open an account to deposit money.
Finally I found a more moronic, arbitrary and unprofessional bank than Kookmin Bank, and I thought that would be a stretch.
Sorry, have hi-jacked the thread. |

I am not saying that you are lying, but I opened a bank account on a tourist visa, and no job. The only problem I had was getting an international debit card. The clerk kept saying impossible, I said it was possible and made him call the help line. They told him to stop being an idiot and they apologised to me. I'm with wori
I guess everyones experience is different |

The problem developed when I wanted an ATM card. Then they printed a criteria sheet off in English.
First section was-ID that is not passport or ARC ie Credit Card. I use cash. Don't like credit cards, don't use them, don't want them. Gave them my NZ Teachers Council card. What's wrong with a bloody passport suddenly??
Second section was:Proof of being able to support yourself, hence why they wanted to know how I paid for my milk . I wasn't giving them a stack of personal information just to be able to lend them my money. On the criteria form this duly means "DENY APPLICATION"
I have a bankbook and so-called International ATM card, whether they work or not is a different story.
Standard Chartered Bank have an account called 두드림 통장 which is meant to be an on-call 3.6% account. Seemed pretty good for just day to day. The woman there spoke OK English, she was just being either obstinate, was incorrectly interpreting policy or the bank has ridiculous policies full-stop. |

Am finding though that I'm getting more and more ajosshi-like after just 5 weeks back here.
"우리 은행, 응??!! 야!! 사장 오디??!!"
I'm starting to see why Koreans shout at each other so much, it's the only bloody way to get anything done. Certainly got my beer re-instated on the plane. Still fuming a bit over that one.... |
which branch did you go to out of interest? I went to the Itaewon branch and didn`t encounter many problems opening the 두드림 통장. I had the same thing about the passport though for some odd reason. Not sure who`s bright idea that was. |

Dodok-dong. The branch is local to my apartment.
Yeah, not very bright about the passport. You should show some ID to get an account up and going to prevent identity theft, but my Teachers Card could have been a library card and they wouldn't have had a clue.
I'm thinking the pretext for this kind of stuff is "Chinese Phishing Scammers", or a banking hysteria about them a few years ago. I could kind of understand not wanting to give an international ATM because they want to hang on to the money, but let me get some money in their first!! Do they really need a Korean to vouch for me to do that?
I think telling them I was an unemployed local put the zap on their heads. |
