Yes, it can be done. My first 2 weeks in Seoul and I've gone through 2 million won. I did not hold back on anything. Bought everything I needed for my place (i.e. top bed cushion/mat, dishes, blender, lamps, etc...), some clothing, and a few luxury items (i.e. guitar-300k, dvd player, good computer speaker system, printer, etc), got a couple of massages as well.

Gone out, drank, spent money on cabs, basically lived it up... didn't go to nuts on restaurants though. I did go on 2-3 dates and paid for everything ...which seems to be expected anyway... lol

Just posting for those who are always asking. Now that I have everything I need I'm curious as to how much I'll need month to month to get by, living modestly.

Ok, I need to get paid now by my school since I am down to my last few pennies Shocked

On my last trip to Korea earlier this year, I spent $2,000 per week over the course of my stay. I didn't think I did really that much. Never drank and only did a few touristy things. My major purchases were a large computer monitor, air filter, and about $3,000 in presents. I would sometimes leave 20,000 won tips though. It was interesting to see how Koreans reacted to them. Sometimes they thought I was making a mistake, other times they were incredibly grateful, and some times they would absolutely insist I not tip.

Jesus! You should have held off on some of that stuff man! When I head over that way I certainly won't be going spending-crazy at first, aside from actually getting basic stuff that I *need*.

You can buy kim bap for 1000 a role and live on 3 of those a day. Korea is expensive if you are not careful. Korea is hell if you don't leave 20000 per day for everyday until you get paid.

Why would you leave tips? So silly...

Yes.

I've left myself short a month or two before and it sucks.

I forgot that it is a different feeling being broke abroad as opposed to broke at home where I can always head to my parents place for comfort.

+10,000,000

From all of the tourists who will never read this post. Yes, thank you for changing the tipping culture so that the millions of tourists who will follow in your footsteps will now be expected to tip in the wake of your "generosity."

If you want to give away money for nothing, at least donate it to to those who really need it.

Holding off on one or two of the luxury items (instant gratification) would have seen you thru for the next two weeks. Good luck asking for an advance, paying that off, and learning to budget. When your earnings start to come in, pay yourself FIRST, i.e., set aside a good chunk for savings, then budget the rest.

I get paid later this week.. have about 80,000 won left which should be more than fine - just have to STOP going places that keep taking my money Shocked

Who the hell said electronics were cheap in Korea anyway?? I'm finding certain prices here that are ridiculous... (i.e. guys trying to charge 300k for an 8 gig nano, when I got one in Canada for under $200 cdn)

Keke...plz tell me you're not shopping in yongsan or technomart. I speak Korean fairly well and can help you out in both places. I recently bought a old-age tape...like really ...tape recording machine (you remember those cassette thingies right). I asked around at Technomart (this was actually two days ago) how much they cost and got prices ranging from 100,000 won to 35,000 won on average. I eventually found a guy who sold the same item to me for 20,000 won. If you don't speak Korean don't even think about those places. And if you look non-Korean expect to move from booth to booth before you pay for anything anywhere close to the worth of the item.

My first check was blown on a decent computer setup (which was a necessity) and a DSLR camera kit (not a necessity but I wanted one for the longest time). I did all my living on my fly over money that month, so I think I beat you by spending 2.4 mil in two days.

Now that I've been here a year, I don't really need anything else that is expensive, so I'm into savings mode. 1.2 mil per month. The remainder is enough to get by comfortably and go out on the weekends.

Yeah I've quickly realized that iPark and Technomart (for the most part) are not cheap at all... I was even with a K-girl one time thinking it would help, but she was looking for an iPod herself, and I couldn't believe the prices she was being quoted... I was the one telling her to walk away...

If anyone knows where I can find a decent air purifier for the price, please let me know Cool
