Hi,
I work at one of the large-chain hagwons and have done so for 9 months...3 months to go!
Anyway like most hagwons (according to the posts on here), they often surprise us with last minute decisions and the occasional ridiculous request.
The latest incident happened yesterday, when we (the other foreign teacher and myself) arrived and there was a note on our desks simply stating "medical tests, wednesday, midday." No asking, explanation or anything.
Anyway it's like getting blood out of a stone getting any information at our place, but suffice it to say, I'm not happy at their request and I'm unwilling to have some random tests actually in my workplace when a) they didn't even have the courtesy to ask, b) it's 3 hours before I am supposed to start work, and c) I have no idea what they are testing for.
Any thoughts? Am I overreacting?
It later turned out that it's mostly the foreign teachers who are going to get tested...
Sometimes (actually most of the time) their behaviour is laughable. Maybe the foreigners haven't eaten enough kimchi during the course of their lives, and are subsequently at an increased risk of getting swine flu...
Anyway thanks for reading...

I would explain, pleasantly and in a low key manner that "in my country an employer would simply never do this, so of course I'm VERY uncomfortable with it. Can you tell me exactly what tests it is you want
to perform?" Probably swine flu... |

Thanks for your reply. Yeah it must be for swine flu. They've probably promised the parents "mandatory health checks for the foreign teachers" or something along those lines... |

For whatever it's worth:
Last year, about a month before the end of my contract, I was asked to do a medical check (and this was way before swine flu). I was told the health insurance company required it or something. I also posted a message here asking if that was normal and I was told that it's not unheard of. |

Thanks...what did they test you for? And was it at the hospital? I'd have no problem going to the hospital if they explained that it was needed for health insurance reasons. It's the fact that these tests will happen on campus and they haven't offered the slightest bit of explanation. |
