Hey guys, anyone doing Yoga??
I've been practicing Yoga for 4 years on and off, and then I stopped going to the class a year ago. I did quick routine of some poses to stretch my muscles at the end of the day before I go to bed. That kept my body pretty flexible enough to follow all the poses in class which I started again last Sunday.
and I woke up with sore muscles in all parts of my body on Monday!
It's not very painful, but I don't know if I should have couple days of break to recover? or should I just keep practicing everyday?
Any Yogis, give me some advice!
oh and I do Vinyasa Yoga. |

I've been doing hot yoga 5 or 6 times a week for the past 6 months. I've also been a pretty serious weight lifter for about 12 years. And been a major bicyclist for years too.
If your body is sore, you should rest it. You should wait until your muscles and joints feel powerful and full of energy before you push them again. Otherwise you will overtrain and possibly injure yourself. Resting is a major, major part of making progress and overtraingin is probably the mmost common way that people slow down that progress.
I usually do yoga for 2-4 days in a row, and then when the soreness builds up too much i'll take a day or two off, and when I start again I feel the flexibility gains and feel much more powerful from the rest I took. When I keep on pushing and don't rest, my progress tends to slow down a lot. Resting is very important.
Just listen to your body. One thing i've learned about exercise is that it's much better to listen to your own body, than to listen to other people. Sometimes you'll go only one day and need rest, sometimes you can go 7 days with no rest, sometimesyou should take really long rests too. It should be dynamic like that.
I am a HUGE fan of hot yoga. When I can't go to the hot yoga studio, I will put a humidifier in my room and wear thick sweats and sweatshirts. Heating up your body makes you stretch further and reduces the chances of injury. It seems so obvious, but a lot of people practice their yoga in cool rooms wearing very little clothes. |

oh wow you work out a lot!
I don't think I'm ready for hot yoga but I'm loving this Vinyasa yoga I'm doing right now. I barely sweat in usual but this yoga studio, there's no air conditioning system and they also closes all the windows. So, the studio gets heat up and I sweat like a pig! I don't think I can do yoga with sweats on.
longs pants get in a way to do some poses.
oh and just one more question, I really like this new class but there are some people with serious moaning with breatheing during the entire class that kinda bugs me. I've took yoga class (i used to do hatha and power yoga) before here and there, but I've never seen these people before. Do you know anything about this? |

Usually one day on, one off is best. You need to practice regularly though at least 3 times a week for max benifits.
I strive for mon / wed / fri after work and sometiems chuck in a seession on sunday if not hungover (or sometiems it's great for if you ARE hungover)
I think everyday is too much. Vinyassa if I'm correct is mostly stretching rather than strengthening poses am I correct..?
Intense stretching everyday will lengthen too mcuh and eventually weaken your muscles.
I do a hatha program which is a mixture of stretching postures and strengthening ones. I also have a power yoga dvd which is all postures for strength and stamina. I like to mix them up so I do the hatha one for getting me limber so I can comfortably do the power (ashtanga yoga) one the following session....
Power yoga everyday is fine but yeah stretching everyday will make you weak... |

Yes, there is a good part of stretching, but I think the class I'm taking also helps me strengthening too. I can feel my leg and arm muscles getting stronger and hard. But I don't know if doing yoga only is going to help me tone up my body though. I mean I don't want to be buffed but I still do want to have lean muscles and would love to get rid of fats on my tummy and thigh. I was thinking I should do some cardio along my yoga practices.
but I'm not very athletic, I can't run for longer than 5 minutes without a break. Would that help even if I run and walk like every 3 minutes?? |

You want to try Ashtanga yoga (commonly known as 'power yoga.') Lots of deep lunges and balances for the legs, downward dogs and plancks for the arms and core, lots of back postures such as cobra and flying lotus for the whole back. After the 50 min dvd I do I feel pumped and I'm sweating like a ______.
I found just doing my hatha yoga dvd 3 or 4 times a week was enough to keep me slender and toned. If I switch to the power yoga dvd as my main form of exercise though I get the added benefit of feeling stronger and looking more defined, I even get visible abs after a few weeks, swear to god... You have to do it in the afternoon or morning though as most people (me included) feel it stimulates you so much that it's near impossible to sleep if you do it in the evening.... |

Incorrect. Vinyasa is an integral part of Ashtanga yoga. This "power yoga" is likely just a custom series of poses based on Ashtanga yoga (with the vinyasas taken out). If you want to learn what Ashtanga yoga is, get a copy of the "Primary Series of Ashtanga Yoga" by David Swenson. It's a wonderful way to build both strength and flexibility! The point being, if you're doing Ashtanga yoga without vinyasas, you're not really doing ashtanga yoga. |

Are you a comedian? You talk about listening to your body and then you tell people to do hot yoga. Hot yoga is for idiots who couldnt hear their body even if they were having a heart attack. Then you post a video talking about intense yoga.
Real yoga involves lots of meditation and subtle spontaneous movements. Not some set pattern that every idiot in the class does. People who execise a lot tend to fall into the category of people who can't listen to their bodies. They are so stressed and don't know how to face the stress so they need to stretch and exercise to dissipate all of their tension.
Hot yoga-hahhahahhahha. |

Once I saw a long angry argument about the meaning of the beatles' song Let it Be. It might even have been on here. |

There is a traditional yoga which you referred as real yoga. Yoga has been a very popular workout lately, and it has been developed in many different styles. People practice the style of yoga they like and suits for their body better. I can't believe how arrogant you are, when you can't even spell the words correctly. |
