|
|
Hi guys,
Sorry if this question has been asked before. Is it possible to sign a 14-month contract? I plan to renew, however, when my contract ends, school will be in session. So I'm thinking there are 2 ways to do this:
1. Sign a 12-month contract, and when it ends, extend my work Visa for 60 days?
2. Sign a 14-month contract, if possible?
Please share your experiences. Thanks a lot. |

You can only get a E-2 visa for 1 year, so the contract needs to be for a year. If you work out something later and extend it, that's fine. |

The school will only sign a 12 month contract. |

I don't think that you can extend an E-2 Visa...you can extend your period of sojourn, but not the Visa. All E-2 Visas are for 12 months, and each new 12 month period requires a new Visa. |

It's a matter of semantics -
An E-2 visa expires 90 days after being issued (this cannot be extended) if it is not used to enter Korea. The day it is used to enter Korea, a one-year period of sojourn starts. This can be extended as many times as required... assuming you keep re-signing with the same employer; or, once for up to thirty days for non-work purposes at the end of a contract.
I'm currently on my third, one-year period of sojourn - all on the same visa. |

Sorry if I didn't state my situation clearly. I plan to stay in Korea to WORK for 14 months, then leave Korea for good when school is NOT in session. I'm currently working at a PS. I suggested this to my school, so far they like my idea. I'm curious if there are people who are in the same boat, how did you go about doing this? Did you sign a 12-month then extend WHAT?
Thanks again. |

14 months is unusual... Why not call immigration directly??
Dial 1345
PS the first option you posted seems best |

I'm not sure if my situation is analogous, but I'm on a 14 month contract at a public school. I came to Korea in December under a 14 month contract, but when I got here they basically made me sign a new 14 month contract with a 12th month opt-out.
I have a friend that came here in October and they had her sign a 15 (?) month contract that ends in March, again with the 12th month opt-out.
When are your 12 months up? I guess what I can tell you is, such contracts do exist, usually to avoid having new teachers come during the semester, and if your school is okay with it, it shouldn't be a problem. |

So... what did your visa have on it? One year or 14 months. My consulate only allowed 1 year visas. Not 6 month, not 18 month. Only 1 year. And usually, they are fussy about what the contract says when it comes to dates. The main issue for the 1 year contracts are the visas. |
