This is from the new AIDS awareness campaign being launched in Germany, where they are showing women having sex with dictators with the caption at the end saying "AIDS is a mass murderer."
Warning: this link leads to a rather graphic video
Myself, I think it's a good idea - might shock a few complacent sorts into being more sensible. |

Racy, but intended message is buried somewhere.
Just looks like some pinko, liberal, hippie wannabe, RTF [Radio, Television, Film] major's midterm project that earned a dismal C+. |

I was gonna say roughly the same thing(minus the political invective).
Considering Susan Sontag's famous argument that fascist imagery contains an inherent erotic appeal, it's possible that that ad could actually make the targetted behaviours seem more, rather than less, attractive to some people. I think the ad with the tarantula performing cunnilingus would probably be more effective in appealing to a universal sense of repulsive imagery. |

The ad is neither interesting nor likely to be effective. |

Those of you posting here are mostly old gits on the wrong side of 25. Not only that, you are male, and thus it's lost much of its shock effect, as you have all no doubt spent years surfing the internet for hardcore porn.
If I were a teenager watching that I would find it very colourful and fascinating, and seriously think about its message (which isn't that hard to figure) which is that AIDS will kill you, so don't f*** about without a condom.
I think it works because it reminds people that AIDS is out there...and does affect heterosexuals...something a lot of people seem to have conveniently forgotton.
It's effective because it's very controversial and so it's got the topic back out into the headlines, and now people will be discussing AIDS regardless of the ad. |

I think most people in this advertisement's target demographic all ready know about AIDS. If the facts about the disease aren't sufficient to scare them into playing it safe, this advertisement isn't going to do it.

The WHO:

| Quote: |
A quarter of a century after the outbreak of Aids, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has accepted that the threat of a global heterosexual pandemic has disappeared.
In the first official admission that the universal prevention strategy promoted by the major Aids organisations may have been misdirected, Kevin de Cock, the head of the WHO's department of HIV/Aids said there will be no generalised epidemic of Aids in the heterosexual population outside Africa. |
Any ad about AIDS/HIV in the west must be directed at IV drug users and men who have sex with men. Insertive and receptive heterosexual vaginal sex is not an efficient means of transmission. Which is why AIDS destroys the populations it does.
The ad above isn't about awareness. It is a political statement establishing the lefty shock-cred of the organization that produced it. |

Epidemiologists have never satisfactorily explained why HIV decided to attack primarily heterosexuals in Africa, and gays and IV drug users everywhere else.
I have a couple of problems with that graph. First, what exactly is the mechanism by which sex acts which do not involve receiving blood or semen (e.g. insertive oral intercourse) transmit HIV?
Second, I have had insertive penile-vaginal intercourse 10,000 times and have not gotten AIDS five times; in fact, not even once.
Am I just very lucky? |

I have my ideas. The WHO and World Bank assign HIV pos to patients who show signs of a diminished immune system and those who have TB. They do not engage in widespread testing. If you are from a country with extremely poor sanitation you are likely going to show signs of a diminished immune system. HIV is wildly over estimated in Africa. Which is why they're constantly revising the numbers downward. The rates are estimates derived largely from observation (and mathematical models) and not testing. When they do test, they test at risk populations and extract to the wider society (men in jail, hookers, homosexual men etc).

The idea here is that the transmission in those situations is likely from individuals who have preexisting STI's. An open sore on the *beep* or vagina for insertive sex or in the mouth is an open door to the virus.

Those are for interactions with an infected partner. So if you had sex 10,000 times with a female who was positive then you're at a high risk. If you had sex with 10,000 different women of unknown status, then you have to look at the rate of infection * the rate of probable transmission. The number will be extremely small. If the women were prostitutes then you have to look at the estimates of infection for them. And so on.
A big problem is men who have sex with men and women. Gay men have dramatically higher rates for all STI's and are then more likely to pass it to their female partners.
Anyways, HIV is not something that heterosexuals have to worry about unless they're banging hookers or there is a risk that a male partner is banging dudes. |

Accepting all the data you've provided, there are still other dangers:
a) Hetero vaginal intercourse with those who have STD/STIs
b) Hetero anal intercourse
I agree, however, the focus of sexual education for teens should be telling them the honest truth. Yet, since many teenagers are still unaware of their sexuality or aware but closeted, and since we want to protect homosexuals from this disease as well, it deserves major attention in sexual education. |

Yes, you're totally correct. If you have an open sore on your wang and are hiv + then the women on the other end of that deal is at a significantly higher risk of infection.

I agree. Sunshine is the best disinfectant, as always. We North Americans struggle with honesty it seems. |

| The most effective scare-tactics, I believe, are those that show real life consequences (this, for example). Hitler shagging a bird? Dear me, no. A giant spider giving a woman oral sex? Jesus Tapdancing Christ. |

Agreed. Practically, men cannot get it from women sexually. |
