I live in Haebangchon and work in Apgujeong. Anyone know of any foreigner friendly Taekwando, or any martial arts places in these areas that you would reccomend? Thanks |

If you want a more combat ready martial arts style, try Hapkido. All places will be foreigner friendly, but the only problem will be that you will be in a class with kids, the later the class, the older they are. So the last class will mostly have junior high and high school students. It's purely physical, so the language barrier shouldn't be a problem. |

Okay I will definitely look into that. Does anyone know of any places near/around Apgujeong or Itaewon that offer any of these classes? |

I'd also second Hapkido as I am currently studying it. I have also studied TKD. TKD is basically what you would call a "martial sport". I also have a friend who was promoted to Black Belt while only having attended two months of lessons. I have heard through the rumor grapevine that there is a style of TKD that is "old school" and really into the hand 2 hand aspect more and I would really be interested in that. Currently I am going to get as many Dan's as possible in HKD before getting bored and movng on. |

General rule of thumb to follow when looking into TKD: The older the owner, the more likely he is more traditional/hardcore in terms of training regiment. TKD can be brutal, especially 'green-light' sparring (no pads, full contact). I had a traditional TKD instructor who would crank up the thermostat to 90+ degrees while we sparred. Intense. TKD is a good base to start training from, however, I would recommend boxing or Muay Thai in terms of real-life effectiveness. It's a matter of finding the right studio and trainer. TKD nowadays has regressed and is a shadow of what it used to be. |
