Hi guys,

So I just got my visa number but the recruiter has told me that they have to delay my arival for 2-3 weeks because of swine flu. He forwarded a letter from the school in which they said that they were sorry but it was to do with concerned parents or something to that effect.

Was just wondering if anyone else is in the same limbo situation...

that is unless they don't want to give you chuseok as a paid holiday (wouldn't surprise me).

Sorry to hear that awong. Where are you headed? I'm supposed to be going to Gangneung so just wondering if this is a localised thang.

So who are they using to fill the jobs you would have been doing during that time?

BS! I am sorry girls and guys but the recession/depression is starting to cut in. The swine flu bs is just a excuse. This is just the start of unhappy times. Many persons and companies are starting to feel the pinch. Take what you can get and do not be picky.

Doesn't make any sense. The sooner they get you here, the sooner you can start. With swine flu, they can always keep you away from work the first week and that should placate parents - they all know that symptoms appear within a week or so (really less, but whatevs).

I'd say they're just not sure they can afford you/want you. I'd keep looking. While there is a bit of a recession, there are still plenty of jobs.

This does sound like the ridiculous "face saving" again. Get used to them giving you excuses to avoid the embarrassment of saying they "stuffed up." Rolling Eyes

I was headed to Incheon... Just last week they were emailing to make sure I got my visa and told me that I could book my flight after that. Less than a week from then they said due to swine flu there are less students. I already got my visa... can I use the same visa to apply for other jobs? I don't know if I want to wait until the end of 2009. Can they find out if I apply in other places? I was so ready to go. I am beyond disappointed. Crying or Very sad

No, a visa is good for one place only. If you get another job, you have to do the process again. One thing I'm not sure about. If you have a visa issuance number, you can't get another visa issance number until the first one is cancelled. Not sure if you have a visa that hasn't been "activated" yet by entering Korea, if you can get a visa issuance number. Sorry, wish I could be more helpful.

Many times an employer will 'hire' well in advance of when they actually need the body here (in K-land) and use delaying tactics to keep the potential employee(s) 'on the line'... only to cancel when someone presently working for them decides to re-sign; or, when they finally chose the 'youngest/best-looking/blondest' amongst the pool of applicants they have amassed.

Swine flu is the perfect delaying tactic excuse!

Ahhhhhhh! This is so frustrating! So basically, I have no idea if they will even want me in late 2009 or not AND I can't apply elsewhere unless I cancel my visa with them. There are a few other places that want to interview me. This job took me forever to get. I'm Asian American and that alone was a hurdle. Anyone know what I can do? Should I start at square one? Is there any way the visa I have can be altered to go to another school if I bring it back to the Korean Consulate? I was so excited too.. *sigh* sorry for the rant Sad

I feel your pain, I may well be in the same situation.

If you went through a recruiter then call them up, tell them you want some straight answers or your going to take your business elsewhere. It way just give them the kick up the arse they need - either in sorting you out at the current school or getting you opportunities elsewhere.

Good luck mate.

To clarity, are you Korean-American or Non-Korean-American. All you said was Asian. If you're getting an E-2, I'm assuming you're not Korean. Ya, it's not as easy as it could be to get a job, but you're still not the low man on the totem pole.

But you can interview with other companies, no problem. Remember, you only have 90 days to enter the country from the time you get your visa. If the school waits til December, you would need a new visa anyay. Call immigration or your consulate and tell them E-2 visa is no longer viable and how can you cancel it. Also, go ahead and get all your info again, your background checks and transcrips.
