I am looking into possibly starting a distance MA in TESOL or Applied Linguistics next year. I am most interested by the courses offered by the University of Birmingham, University of Nottingham and the University of Manchester.
At the moment, I am weighing up whether to concentrate on my study of Korean for 2 years while saving up to go home and get my MA onsite or starting a distance course next year.
From my point of view, there are advantages and disadvantages to both. I suppose if I was working full time and studying for an MA I might have to drop my Korean classes.
I am wondering if people wouldn't mind giving me an idea of how they structure their distance MA work. How much time is spent on reading, doing assignments and other aspects of study?
I would be really interested to hear from people who have studied at Birmingham, Nottingham or Manchester in particular. |

I'm one of 4 U of Nottingham DL students in Korea. Based on my experience, you will need to spend an average of 15 - 20 hours a week to get by with all the reading and assignments. Over 2 or 3 years this is a substantial investment of time, and along with a full-time job I doubt you will still have time for Korean classes (unless of course you've discovered a drug to replace sleep ). |

Thanks SS
I thought 15 to 20 would be about right. How are you finding the course with Nottingham? Do you think that the distance learning over 3 years what you could learn in 1 year onsite?
How far are you into your course at the moment? |
