hey I'm new to the world of P2P. Recently I was looking through some old posts ans came across glowing reports for WinMx. Since I was currently using Kazaa (not very impressed) I donwloaded winMx. The problem I am having is I am not sure how to configure my settings for optimal speed. Right now it is painfully slow...does anyone use this program and if so how do I route TCP connections through my firewall without disabling it etc. Any help would be great...ciao

P.S. Does anyone know of any good pay sites to download movies? I see a bunch out there that guarantee fast, reliable downloads that are fairly inexpensive but I want to make sure before I shell out even $20

You're going to have to do a bit of tweaking of the firewall to get it running without bringing it down.

The easy way to do it is to choose a secondary connection when you start up.

Set your internet connection type to 1 level above what you're on. Anything above "Cable" will do fine.

Making a primary connection will return more search results and provide a faster download.

For this to work, you'd need to configure your firewall to open up TCP port 6699 and map the incoming to that port on your computer. You'll also need to open up UDP port 6257 and map both incoming and outgoing ports through your firewall.

If you don't have a fast connection, then you risk flooding your upstream link and rendering your connection pretty much unusable if you are sharing a lot. If you're not, then it really doesn't make much difference. :)

Try opening the ports and running the setup wizard again. They're in Settings -> Top Left Corner (Setup Wizard..).

Thanks for your help man...just one more question...I went in and fooled around with my network connections and firewall protection trying to figure out how exactely to open said ports but was unable to do so. I am running windows XP and have enabled the windows firewall. How do you open those ports?

Right click on the connection in Network Connections

Go to Advanced -> Settings.

Click on Add

Then you can specify here. Microsoft's built in firewall doesn't restrict anything that is outbound from your machine, so you only need to make two entries.

Make one called "WinMX Incoming UDP". For the computer name, put in your Windows Computer name. I WOULD have said "localhost" but I'm not sure if it'd be listening on the right interface. Also, I'm not sure if your computer is in a routed network (behind an ADSL modem, which would have given you an 192.168.x.x IP, depending on modem), or cable modem, which usually means you don't have any authentication like PPPoE.

In any case, you can find your computer name by rightclicking on "My Computer", clicking on Properties, then going to "Computer name". Under then entry of "Full Computer Name", put in that name into the Firewall entry.

Now put in 6257 for both internal and external ports and set it to UDP.

Do another one labelled "WinMX Incoming TCP". Fill out the rest the same as before, but put 6699 for the ports and TCP for the connection type.

Bob's your uncle, should work perfectly.

Instead of starting a new thread, I thought I'd just add to this one. I'm also a complete newbie to P2P and have recently started using Winmx after beginning this new obsession with Morpheus.

Basically, I have a few questions. First, what is the standard etiquette for file sharing?

Also, I'm doing this from a laptop with limited hard drive space, so I plan to keep stuff for sharing for about a week, before dumping it. Is that long enough? Too long?

What is the procedure for contacting someone to lift you through the queuing? I've had people contact me, but I haven't gone the other way.
