hello
I just got internet... and while sorta talking to the installer I discovered that I only have "middle speed," for internet. I figured out its a DSL connect and I think the guy said its 8 megs? He also said its not good for online games...
he told me my landlady wont let me get faster because he'd have to break the window... I assume he means drill a hole..?
anyhow... is 8 megs or whatever he means ok for using skype? And can I use like xbox live or ps3 online or whatever? I really don't understand internet speeds but he has me paranoid that I am rocking a 26k dial up type deal....
also can you use torrents with this speed? |

The standard DSL speed in Korea is 100/10. That means a theoretical maximum of 100mbps download and 10mbps upload.
You seem to have got a connection with a slightly lower speed. But I don't think you'll notice any difference in practice. It'll still be plenty fast. |

Install the bitmeter:

Freeware.
This will tell you what your real speed is, more or less. There seem to be different ways of counting. When downloading files, it seems the download speed is less than that on the meter, about half. You can install it on a computer with real broadband and compare the results.

Megapass Lite is slow.
My highest DL rate is 1 MegaBYTE / second. On average its around 800-900 MegaBYTES.
My upload is piss poor at around 180 KiloBYTES per second.
When I called KT as asked them to increase the speed, the repair guy says, "We don't guarantee speeds. Some places only get 500 KiloBYTES/s downloads. There is nothing we can do."
Getting the Premium service usually requires the installer to run a fiber line directly from the Utility Pole into the apartment. Hence the need to break a window, drill though a wall, or etc...
OP, do you have an AC? Maybe they can run the fiber line through the same hole through the wall your AC uses for the exhaust pipe. Or, I've also seen installers drill small holes in the rails your windows sit on. There should be more options available than a whole THROUGH your window. |

I'm starting to suspect LG Telecom are throttling torrent traffic. No matter what I do, I can't get the overall download speed above 1.4MB/s.
A little while ago I was getting much faster speeds than that. |

If you get 8megabytes per second you'll be fine.
My KT Megapass Lite has been great. It actually runs faster than the test, and I have clocked 10.4MBps in the past. A lot depends on the building - I'm in an officetel and I assume they have good wiring. |
