I am particularly interested in aikido or hapkido, though I would be wiling to settle for karate or taekwondo. I just want to know where I should look for information about classes in my area. I live in Jukjeon, south of Bundang at the end of the yellow line, and don't really want to travel too much. I work 2p-10p, so I'd need the class to be in the late morning.
I know I could just start walking around and looking at signs, and I've done that and all there is is taekwondo. I'd like to find if there's anything else, first. I've already done a cursory google search for aikido with not much luck, though I did get an email address ([email protected]) and have asked for information. Hopefully someone there speaks Engrish. Thanks for the help. |

Hate to say this mate but you are probably going to be out of luck. Most martial art gyms only have adult classes in the evenings (at mine the adult class is from 10-11 pm) There are a few gyms which also have weekend classes.
I would look for a hapkido class over an aikido class but that's just me. I also predict that with an hour there will be two pages on why all korean martial arts are hopeless and you should only look at BJJ or MMA and how their martial art is so much better in a street fight, but then someone else will say you should only learn kung fu from a master that lives in the mountains of western china that is 3000 years old, but the the BJJ guys will come back and say their master beat the **** out of that guy last week because he was able to get the guy on the ground, to which they will offer to name a time and place where they will show them personally how much better their martial art is by kicking them in the face. Then some one will come along and threaten to stab their apartment. Then things will get just plain weird |

Thanks for the reply? To those who will say such things, I'm not learning martial arts to fight, I'm learning it for fun, for exercise, for discipline, and to beat up my big brother when I go back to America.
Weekend classes would be fine with me. I would also be wiling to join in a children's class, that way I would have a better chance of winning while sparring, and I could stand out better in the teacher's eyes. Plus I could maybe hit on some hot moms, after hitting on their kid. |

I would also agree that finding an adult class in the morning times to fit your schedule would be difficult if not impossible.
I won't suggest one art to you over another, but add that the only thing you may be able to find with adults at that time of the day would most likely be a boxing gym, or an MMA place.
Best of luck in your search |

The thing about joining a children's class though, is that you will not learn much. I understand you are not so much interested in being about to defend yourself, but to pay somewhere between 60,000 - 80,000 thousand a month to join a children's class in which you will spend most of the time either playing soccer, dodgeball, running and jumping over some pads and having the instructor tell the children to practice their English with you. Of course a few techniques will be thrown in here or there, but aside from the fact that you cannot practice them with someone even close to your own size, you will learn the most basic of basic techniques.
I don't think very many places have any classes at that time. However you are likely to find that if you find one with doors that are not locked at that time, you may be able to get private instruction with the head instructor, and one of their assistants. As far as I can tell that would be a perfect situation. Even better if you could find a friend/coworker to join the classes with you at that same time.
Good luck |

I also live in the same area and would be interested in finding where to start a search for martial arts classes. I'm interested in them for the same reason the OP is. My schedule allows for evening classes, does anyone have any ideas for how the OP and I can go about finding some good places around here?
Maybe some of you have tried out some of the places over here and can recommend one over the other? |

The only place where I've found other adults and people of my size who I can spar with are at the Tookkong Musul Martial Arts places. It's a watered down version of what the Korean green berets and secret service are trained in. I've been to two schools, one was great and all out, the other was just like some run of the mill taekwondo place |
