i have a question about ipod and itunes specifically.

i want to get an ipod but have reservations about getting one because of itunes, but i want to know what people think about it.

i don't have a mac but not sure if that matters or not. i've heard that itunes is terrible from some, great from others... is there any other synching program that you can use with ipod instead of itunes???

is an ipod worth the trouble/installing itunes?
what are some equal or better alternatives to getting an ipod?

thanks!

Ipods sync very fast these days. I don't buy songs from I-tunes. They are not difficult to link to on your HDD.

I have a small I-river S10 player, also. It sounds better than my I-pod, only because it has better EQ controls and bass boost features, IMHO. The I-pod is not bad, though. Just don't get suckered into buying the 92,000 won in-ear headphones, which suck.

Itunes is fine when it works. Great even. However, because it is such a large program, and it isn't configured to work on Windows optimally, people often have major issues with it. Present company included. I love it when it works, it really is a good program, but it isn't working for me right now (freezes when I try to load album art from the internet) so I hate it.

If you are getting a Classic or a Nano, jettison iTunes altogether and use Floola instead.

I use it on my old 4th Gen, which is still goin strong. But have to use the Tunes for my iPod Touch. Sad

I found the Ipod to be pretty and easy to use but lacking in audio quality and battery life. I sold mine to get an Iriver and I'm happier with the sound now.

You don't have to use Itunes, There are many alternatives these days. Ipod batteries suck after a year. Be warned. Yes, I like the interface. But the sound is not as good as Iriver or other players like the Sandisk even.

If you're a Windows user, you might want to look carefully at other MP3 players which play a wide range of video and audio files without any software or conversion.

Just drag and drop using Windows. Easy. No fuss.

Lots of choices. iRiver, Cowon, Sansa.....

I use the Cowon S9 (16GB 300,000, AMOLED screen, Kor-Eng dic, plus many more features) with Klipsch in-ear phones (99,000. Excellent. Worth every penny).

Killer sound. Significantly better than iPod. You can commute around noisy Seoul and not hear the slightest outside noise.

So easy to use with Windows. Plug in the USB and just drag and drop. It plays XVID........can the ipod??

Edit: I just checked the price of the 16GB Cowon S9.....down to 265,000.....

I've been using an S9 for 6 months now. Apart from a slightly confusing menu system, I don't think I can fault it. It's best feature is the sound. I used to be quite the audiophile and I reckon this is the best MP3 player I've ever heard.

Actually, the term "MP3 Player" is obsolete now. We should call them PMP's.....they all do audio/video and whatever else PDA-style functions....

I bought a 80gig classic but I couldn't get my third-party mp3s to play on I-pod.

Anyone know what I was missing?

On a second note, I haven't purchased an mp3 in my life. Why would I start with I-tunes? My current music collection runs in the neighborhood of 30-40GB. How much would 3,500 songs run on I-tunes?

What player can you all recommend over 60GB?

Music in mp3 format plays just fine in iTunes. You just need to import it into the iTunes library.

1. Yes, the ipod does not support the greatest range of codecs. For audio, not much of a problem for I'd say 99% of users. For video, it can be a pain in the ass.

2. If you want to compare apps, there is no contest, the ipod Touch destroys everything else out there right now.

3. Sound quality is definitely up for debate. Machine tests confirm that the ipod has one of the best signals from the headphone out available. What it lacks is customizable EQ, which isn't equal to lower sound quality.

4. If you want to compare features, we could go all day long. The ipod Touch can be used as:
E-Reader (either pirate e-books, or legally purchased from Amazon with Kindle app.)
Remote Control for your PC (try that with your S9)
Gaming Device
Web Browser
Internet Phone (ghetto, but works)

The list goes on...

^ Didn't know we were talking about the Touch. I was thinking Nano or Classic. The OP didn't mention the Touch or that they'd spend around 500,000.

Of course, if you can get over using iTunes, the Touch is a great PMP.

But that's because it's 200,000 + more than another 16GB PMP.

I got a ipod nano 4 gig for free from a friend since he wasn't using it. I hate Itunes so I got this program called xplay3. It's just drag and drop. It's pretty easy program. Just install and shows up on your windows explorer.

It's not free so if you want a free copy just PM and I'll email it to ya.

BTW it doesn't work on windows 7 for some reason. We'll see if it works when the full version comes out

I hate iTunes. Its fine until your iPod crashes. YOu plug it into iTunes, then it has to "restore your ipod".

What that means is it'll erase everything you had on it. Even if you "backup" your ipod, it does nothing. I've had to redownload apps, erase apps backed up and redownload them, and also have to manually copy music back to my ipod.

If my ipod needs to be restored, its a good 4-5 hours getting the iPod back to the way it was before it crashed.

An 8gb touch is under 300k. I'd happily sacrifice 8gigs of storage for the other capabilities.

How about an AMOLED screen? Superior battery life? Would you sacrifice those too?

Check it

But, you know, I'm not going to say that the Touch is not an amazing PMP. It is. But there are competitors. It's not way out ahead on it's own.
