Would you take a job offering this? It's on the outskirts of Seoul. I'm thinking the pain-in-the-butt factor of finding my own place to live, coughing up the dreadful deposit, etc., outweighs the decent salary. Plus, I'm somewhat content at my current position, except for the fact that it's incredibly boring and in the middle of nowhere.

Pretty sure I'll turn it down, but just wanted to hear some other people's thoughts.

Anyone have experience getting their own place? Is it as stressful as I anticipate it'd be?

I've rented my own place before when a job didn't provide an apartment. It was worth the extra money and I think it would be for 3.5 as well. Have them help you find an apartment by going to real estate agents with you until you find something.

Of course, other factors besides salary need to be considered as well, but nonetheless, this sounds like a job to be strongly considered. Also, having your own housing does make you less vulnerable in some ways.

You should ask them if they will provide the key money. My friend accepted a similar position for even less money and the school is paying the key money. Now, I wouldn't do it on his salary, but for 3.5 million if you find the right place you could make out like a bandit. I'm sure the school will help you find a place, too.

Finding a liveable apartment is a pain in the asss. Which the exception of a few neighbourhoods in Seoul, you will not be able to afford/or laugh at the amount of rent/key money that they want you to pay.

I don't really see this as being true. When I got my place I really enjoyed having the power to see a bunch of places and choose the one I liked the most rather than having the school choose the first cheap place they found, as is most often the case.

If you have 5 mil for the deposit (you'll get it back!) there are tons and tons of places (really almost anyplace except the fancy pants neighborhoods) where 500K or less will get you a decent one room, or a not so great (think first floor or half basement with windows looking out on brick walls), but much larger one bedroom place. And in most cases the further you get from the subway, the more you can get for the money, if you don't mind taking a bus.

But I guess if you don't have the deposit money, or don't want to part with it, its a whole different story.

For a short-termer, finding your own place can be troublesome. If you have the key money and can do what needs to be done in Korean, then you are most of the way there, but then when you want to leave, there are often lengthy waits associated with getting said key money back.

I rented my own place here and I really like it. It makes it feel more like home because I don't have my boss controlling my life. In fact, I don't even think they know where I live. It actually feels more like I live here and less like a visitor. If you are interested in an English speaking realtor, his name is Gilbert and look on www.nearsubway.com - I would highly recommend it.

I have had enough bullshiit experiences in Korea to realize that there is a very good chance that I won't get my 5 mill back. Live and learn.

I have always gotten my money back. More than 3 times.

But make sure that you have a Korean there to help you out.

How many contact hours?

How many different preps?

How many students in a class?

How much vacation?

How are the facilities (computers, copy machines, Internet access, office space, etc...)?

You could always do some short term housing for a while until you find a place.

I agree.

It is the key money that will make it very difficult for you. There must be some who do without, but the majority wants a big deposit (pbbly around 10M).

If you have 10M sitting around on your bank account, sure why not.

Rent might be around the 800.000 though, so 3.5 - 0.8 = 2.7 gross.

He should be able to find a place that rents for 500,000 or even less.

I had to read this quote out loud to my wife. It sure rings true. You have to be constantly ready for some shiit to go down here.
