I've browsed the past topics on this, but so far, I have as of yet to get a real sense of what actually happens here.
Most people say it's a waste of time, but a strong minority say they met a lot of people there and it was, overall, a good experience.
My school is making me go to the next orientation in September, not that I wouldn't go anyway. Can anyone shed some light on what actually goes on?
Thanks. |

I just had a tour around my GEPIK school today, the faculty doesn't speak English well. I have not yet heard mention of GEPIK orientation, but I am interested in going. |

All new GEPIK teachers have the chance (are forced?) to go to orientation which occurs quarterly.
At the very least it is a week off from teaching. There are some decent conference sessions and some bad ones. You will meet a lot of new teachers and hear a lot of people from the boonies whine about being the only foreign teacher at their school. Make the most of it.
It is way too long but at least you get to drink after 6:00. |

This is what happened in the spring GEPIK Orientation and afterwards
turn up, don't know anybody, grab anyone alone and start talking,
coffee is free!
Obligatory opening address by GEPIK big wigs,
some entertainment by trio of instrument playing dancers
brief description of GEPIK
split into A,B stream and split into class of 15 or so. A, B alternate activities.
Lectures on Korean English curriculum,
lesson planning by a 4 year survivor of ESL Korea (very useful)
how to use games in lessons by a 5 year veteran (very useful)
group introduction session (grouped by locality)
group discussions on problems in the classroom (useful)
demonstrate classroom problem in pairs
meet your local coordinator
group discussion on living in Korea
lesson plan in pairs
intro tourist level Korean
watch movie (My E.T) (Comedy)
Practice presenting your 10 minute lesson
more lectures on how to liven up the class activities (useful)
some people get busted for websurfing with wireless laptops during lecture
present your 10 minute lesson to the group
group vote on the winner
watch another Korean movie (monster movie)
10 minute lessons contest group stage
winners did 'how to buy concert tickets' followed by
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDVE0EyedmY
last night party: screaming contest, dance contest, karaoke etc
start drinking, imbibing, boozing,
last morning, go home.
That's what happened at spring Orientation '09.
If you're a veteran but have to attend because it's your first time in PS, bit of old hat really.
Noobs would find it useful, especially if you're struggling to hold back the tears.
Come back to school, what'd you do while I was gone?
You were gone? They didn't even notice.
Gave you lesson plans, did you do them?
No, we watch video, noad ob da nings.
By the way you got open class today (Monday) till Friday.
(head banging against against wall)
You stop that! Asbestos in the wall!

My co-teacher just got the invite for me and the section on where the orientation is going to take place is different on the english section of the form compared to the korean section. The one in English says Osan, while the one in Korean says Ansong. The orientation is not a week long. It is split into two different dates for the elem. First date is mon-Wed and the second is Wed -Fri. You do not get to pick, my co-teacher entered me into the computer and later the district will let me know. My question is how will they get ready for Wednesday when the first group should be leaving the samday while the other group will be arriving? Will I get a seat at one of the two orientations if I started work on July 27,2009. P.S middle and high a mon-Thur at the end of the month. |

Yeah, that was weird too. Mine in English says Osan, and apparently, they already decided I will be going from Sept 21st to 23rd but you're saying now that it isn't fixed yet?
Ohhhh GEPIK. |

If your co-teacher knows what is going like mine does he/she would have noticed when they tried to enter a date for you on the site it would not let them. I was standing right there when my co-teacher did this. |

You left out the drunken horseplay with the Fire Extinguisher.
Followed by plea's from "Miss in the Dark" to find out who did it. |

I just talked with my co-teacher, and she didn't even realize that there are two dates.
Oh well. They swamp her with so much BS here it's amazing. It's not her responsibility to do this, it's my handler's job, but he doesn't do anything.
Blah. |

I left last night party at 9PM. Don't remember much after that except elbow bending and hangover afterwards. |

I got told about this today, too. I was told I have to go from the 21st to the 23rd. When I asked how to get to Osan, they didn't know. (Still can't figure it out, but I think I have to take a bus to Suwon and then from there to Osan). I asked what time it starts, they didn't know. I asked if I get accomodations there or if I have to come back home each night, they didn't know. I asked if I pay my own way or if they pay for me, they didn't know. I'm so confused! |

Maybe you should contact GEPIK and ask these questions, or make your co-teacher/handler call?
Also, we get (shared) accommodation with the other folks at the orientation, and, I believe, meals.
They're also supposed to pay your transportation, and this is considered a business trip, so you get full pay for the days you missed. |

the GEPIK orientation is ... meh... okay
Best part was meeting other teachers.
Only one presentation (by a PhD in Linguistics) was decent.
The rest was pure pro-Korean we are right you are wrong fluff.
I got the impression that this umbrella called GEPIK there may only be 4 or 5 people working for it. |

I am also going on the 21st to 23rd, though I haven't been told where it is yet. It will be nice to meet some more GEPIK people. |
