The first of the national, middle school, English listening tests (Gr. 1) is taking place as type this. I can't stand the voices of the actors they hire to do these. The unnatural inflection, and the way they sound as though theyre speaking to a three-year-old, drives me nuts!
Anyone else feel this way? |

| I'm thankful for the free periods but yeah it's such an unnatural way to speak. It reminds me of the French listening tests I had when I was their age. Which is why I barely speak French and these kids barely speak English. |

Interesting role reversal in the office, as suddenly all the other teachers can see me reacting to something that, to them, just sounds like noise. When usually it's the other way around.
I guess, for them, it's sort of like when you suddenly notice that your dog appears to be watching TV or something. |

I don't understand. The listening tests are only one period long... do you only have one class on Thursdays? |

I had last Thursday last week off. My co-teach said it was for listening test. Obviously it wasn't. |

I'd have to say yes. Every time I hear them speak, I want to punch them in the face. And I'm not a violent person. |

So they broadcast this thing from some hidden bunker in Korea.
Students have a answer sheet in front of them. There are 20 questions - 1 question for each dialog that is presented.
The questions and answers are written in Korean with the answers being multiple choice.
I'm guessing the students pre-read each question and possible answers prior to the dialog. Then they listen for a key word or phrase that leads them to pick one answer.
No wonder my students can't understand me. They are learning listening by reading questions and answers written in Korean then listening for only one or two words that give them enough info to choose the right answer. When forced to listen without context they're lost. |

Haha I remember reading to my students like those recordings.
The kids and parents loved it. |

Gary Larson "What Dogs Hear."
OK Fido, today we're going walkies to supermarket. There we'll buy food and have a wonderful time. After that, we'll go to the park, and you can eat your bone there. After that, we're going to a very special man, he's called a vet, and he's going to relieve you of your ball, so you won't be able to play with them anymore. But you can have a big sleep after we go to the vet."
