I have recently taught the People song by Peter Weatherall to my students (an advanced English class ) and they loved it. They were really into it since the song was catchy and easy to remember. But I want to get them to do more songs (they really like to sing as long as its easy for them to follow along).

So what I am wondering if you guys give me any songs that would be easy to remember and has a catchy tune. This group is elementary kids from 5th and 6th. They are not really into American pop music, I tried one with them and it bombed. Bad. I had also tried R. Kelley's I believe I can fly and they didn't like it.

It would be great if you guys can help me find or give me names of songs that are catchy, has easy lyrics, and is fun.

Sorry if this is in the wrong thread. ^^ I wasn't sure where it would fit and since this is a job-related question, it can go here?

I have two 5th grade classes and two 6th grade classes. They all demand I play puff the magic dragon (I played it last week to show past tense) and come into class singing the song.

There's a version out there with simultaneous Korean and English subtitles.

Let me know if it works for you Smile

These go down well with my middle school classes as long as I give them lyric sheets. If you can get someone to give a Korean translation of the lyrics, that helps. Most kids learn the words off by heart and sing the songs for weeks on end and only one or two kids per class don't get into it. I mostly use songs as a treat at the end of a good lesson as it's difficult to find songs with content clear enough for a listening exercise.

Wish this would become a sticky and updated often. I just started playing songs in my class and I think they have a lot to offer.

Check out:

I've added gap fills to some songs:

"My Love" by Westlife is always a big hit. Easy to follow too.

Yes, music works. Good suggestions so far...

I could go on for hours but go to EFL Classroom and get the Karaoke player (select TEACH and then Karaoke). Hundreds/thousands of songs made by teachers from around the world. With the player you can slow down the song a little , display words as you want, put up personal pictures as background for the song (in the editor).
http://eflclassroom.com/directory.html

Also quick karaoke with hundreds of quick karaoke songs of all sorts.
This mixwit is the best lyrics on youtube - http://mixtube.org/playlist.php?id=5545

This list http://www.u.arizona.edu/~cphillip/resources.htm highlights some great songs for use with grammar.

With Korean students, I like using songs that Koreans sing in English. Find many and also some translated on the Karaoke video pages as well as the above karaoke page.

The Kids karaoke page (find it on the Site map) has hundreds of kids song. Click and play in full screen. All the classics with words. Sesame street, lullabyes, nursery rhymes etc....

Here's a nice list of bookmarked sites http://www.diigo.com/list/eflclassroom/music-karaoke for using music in the classroom.

Also- we have a full page of all the Nat. Textbook songs sung by Korean artists. A nice variation from the textbook dull crap.

Go Here

Songs student's like are ABC - Michael Jackson. My love / uptown girl / Always Big Bang. / Don't cha - *beep* cat girls. / IF I had a million dollars (see the cool video I made on EFL 2.0 with pictures of all the vocab to help comprehension), lots of beatles songs including Hello / Goodbye. I'm too sexy / We are Family / That's the way I like it / He's got the whole world (get the students to create their own lyrics for this).

But get a microphone for the class and get them singing. Don't kill a song with too much work on it. Just use it as part of a lesson, to highlight certain aspects of English. They rhythm and indelible knowing of a song will have an impact.

Search HERE for Lastonestanding. A cool music game.

Another teacher posted about doing some English songs from the Wonder Girls. I think that was a brilliant idea. They will be happy to see some of their popular Korean groups singing English, and work in your favor. Rather than showing them a bunch of white strangers.

Tenchu,

Totally agree. Lots of Koreans singing in English too!

Here's an example http://www.vimeo.com/6515796 (not all English) but lots I've put into Karaoke. Also, just for interest, I've a whole pile of playlists for Korean music at http://www.veewow.com/eflclassroom

My co teacher chose Lucky by Brittney spears with a worksheet.

When MJ died we did Heal the World with a worksheet.

I have done "Summer Holiday" On english camp.

There is a website http://www.i-scream.co.kr. If you can get a password anyway you can it has simple songs that relate to each lesson.

They would only hope to learn very few short songs in Elementary but writing a few missing words is great listening practice.

The wiggles are great younger students get into them more then 5 and 6 though.

I guess I am lucky though they always like the choices.
