|
|
I've never done St. Patrick's Day activities in the classroom, but my current director is big on letting the kids experience North American holidays/occasions. Does anybody have any classroom tested St Patrick's Day elementary classroom activities - not university activities;) - they've used here? Of course, I've done the usual internet search. Just looking for some actual teacher input here.
Thanks! |

I like how you describe St. Patricks Day as a North-American holiday!!!! I suppose it is...... but isn't it in principle an Irish holiday?
Anyway, classroom activities.
Not easy as St. Paddys day has few customs bar the drinking..
You could have them make lucky four-leaf clovers. Make a template of one and copy enough for all the class.
Tell the story of St. Patrick on the whiteboard. The legendary driving the snakes out of Ireland would be the comedy section!
Teach them where Ireland is!!!!! Most kids don't know where it is and that the people there speak English. |

I had a pattern of a leprechaun to color and cut out. Then we hid them all over the room and played "hot and cold."
"Is he under the desk?"
"You're cold!"
"Is he hiding behind the door?"
"Getting warmer!"
etc.
When you find them all you could make a nice seasonal bulletin board. |

Perhaps I should have re-phrased that as "a Korean director's concept of what North American holidays are". I've never classified it as a North American holiday before either, which is why I've never introduced it to the kiddies before. Maybe we should have a poll on the subject.
Anyway, thanks for the ideas! |

I like how the poster stressed elementary school age kids activities for St. Paddy's Day and not university level ones. I can only imagine uni level activities. "OK students, we're at a pub. Everyone repeat that: PUB!"
Nice field trip though.... |

I went for the "Hide the Leprachaun" activity, but decided to introduce a little more chaos into it. I hid them all over the hogwan and made the students search out specific ones, and report back to me on where they were. ("Bill is in the bathroom beside the mirror.") And, of course, I explained to them the background of St. Patrick's Day, and made them do some language activities. |
