Hi,

Im moving to Seoul in August and was wondering what the electronic music scene is like there. Do many big name DJ's play? I'd be talkin Techno, Electro, Drum n' Bass kind of stuff.

Cheers,

Dave

Major artists spin in Seoul all the time. Nearly every weekend you can find an internationally ranked DJ at one of the major clubs.

Deep Dish, James Zabiela, Ferry Corsten, PVD, AVB, Tiesto, Above and Beyond, Carl Cox, Sasha...nearly every top 10 DJ has played here a couple of times in the 5 years I've been in Korea.

You'll be fine.

It was going fairly decently when I was DJing in Seoul back in 2006-07, but I haven't been back since 2007, so I can't say what the scene's doing at the moment. I'll be DJing soon after I arrive next week and get settled back in, so I'll find out soon enough!

I have to say I prefer the UK Garage and Speed Garage (like the Spin, Spin, Sugar, Armand van Helden's remix) to Dubstep, I'm not quite into the moody 140 bpm, dubstep style quite as much. I tend to play and produce what I guess I'd call "Progressive House." Breakbeat seems to have been really popular in Seoul too. From time to time you'll find a psy-trance show, but not really my thing, but there are some very committed Koreans in the psy-scene. DnB seems to have also been very popular in the underground scene too, especially at clubs like Cargo. Although, for me, DnB makes my ears bleed. Wink

As I said though, my information on the current scene is a bit outdated.

Here are some places to check out for events:

I highly recommend my friend Don Urban's Facebook Group, Seoul Vibes Global, he's one of the promoters of shows in Seoul and he often will give free admission passwords for his shows through his Facebook, he's also very plugged into the happenings of the country:

Sorry to disappoint you, but I just checked with Nic and he's playing in Texas during the middle of May and then detroit and miami later in the month. He's in Europe much of the summer, but aren't any Asia dates on the schedule.. His schedule is booked through the end of August..

But Marcus Schulz is playing the Walkerhill on Saturday, May 16th! That's going to be a mad-awesome show.

Presale: 40K won, at the door 50K won

Expensive of course, but the WalkerHill shows are usually pretty awesome and Schulz is a legend.

Here's the link:

Also on FRIDAY the 15th at Club Vera (Hongdae) is

Scott Pullen (Australia)
with RICHARD BOXER (AUSTRALIA)
ROSS MACKAY (IRELAND)

If you want to get free passes for the Pullen show, email me directly at [email protected] and I should be able to hook you up!

..and no, I don't get kickbacks from any promoters in Seoul!

Techno = Yes.

Drum n' Bass = Yes.

Electro = Depends on your definition.

Dubstep = Accomplice has left the country.
