I just wrote a post about trying to find my avatar function, that seems to be missing from my profile section.
But I made some careless errors in my post (due to my inebriated state in which I wrote it) that some posters found for me and politely pointed them out to me so I could correct them on my post.
This brings up a point about what I see alot these days- why is there so many hate and contempt toward ESL teachers, not just in reality but on this board amongst each other as well?
True certain aspects of the community are the archetype of the ESL teacher that is portrayed on the news all too often, but most of you are pretty decent, hard-working people. I believe without you guys, Korea would not be the export giant it is today.
I think alot of how Koreans think about ESL teachers is based on their form of status, coupled with what they see when they go out and what they see on TV. But in reality, ESL teachers serve a very immeasurable service to Korean society, which unfortunately will not be making any difference at least for another twenty years when these young people go out and start working and having children. My greatest hope is that they will use their encounter with ESL teachers as a way to help bring some kind of normalcy and stability to the foreign expat community.
Right now, we are in a recession. Korea is also facing the effects of the global economic downturn as many people lose their jobs as companies cut staff to save money. During times like these, such as during the IMF crisis, many Koreans turned to learning English as a way to become or remain competitive in the job market. Also, those who have jobs should be thankful for them since many people back in our homecountries are stuggling to find work. I don't think bickering about status and who has what should make any difference- because when push comes to shove, it doesn't.
You guys are doing an excellent job- I for one am deeply appreciative of the service you provide to the Korean community. Don't be upset about what others in society think about you- if you have a talent they don't, it is a virtue, not a curse. Also, it doesn't matter where we are from because here we are and we are in this together.
Good job! |

Too long to read, but
I think it's because when the ESL teachers have worked for so long in the same dead field, they tend to take their job seriously. A lot like religious nuts that push their faith on you.
You can't blame them, it's not their fault. |
