The Koreans are right though, Fall is the most sentimental season.

Lots of change happening at school and in my personal life too.

I must say, I'm really looking forward to the fall. I get to finally use the nice sweaters that I brought over (and though I'd be using weeks ago) as well as hopefully the colder weather will kill those damned mosquitoes around in my area. Man, I've been bitten all over.

Plus, I have to admit, I am a sap for the leaves changing colour.

I can't help but ask you though, Clockout, by chance are you having a bit of romance in your life? Wink By the way I'm reading your posts it certainly sounds like a lot of good stuff is going on.

I like fall for the colors (if there were trees in Seoul), but mainly because it's the last transition into winter. Now there's a season I could have year round.

I like snow up to my knees. I like never breaking a sweat (I'm incredibly hot blooded. In summer I feel like hanging myself.) I like sweaters and long sleeve shirts. I'd like jackets and coats too if I ever needed them. Last two winters haven't been cold enough for me to throw on anything more than a light jacket, similar to what most people are wearing now. I like to take a deep breath and feel the icy cold rush into my lungs. I love that "smell" winter has. I like to see the apartment buildings, cars, and roads with a fresh layer of white snow on top each morning. I like to throw my head back and stick my tongue out to catch falling snow flakes. I like making fresh tracks in untouched snow. I like being able to sing Xmas tunes and not looked at weird like when I do it in July. I like hot cocoa. I like to see people carrying shopping bags through the mall as the speakers play "hear those slay bells jingaling, ringding ding-a ding ding."

The rest of the entire year is just a build up to winter for me. The day I can finally turn off my air conditioner (which goes on around Feb) and just open my window to let the cold air outside in, it's one of the happiest days of the year for me.

Autumn is great. Nice fresh air, I don't have to go into banks to dry off, the mosquitos have gone and it's a wonderful time for park and mountain drinking.

Winter though can be as hellish as summer. Here's to a long Autumn!

-Thermostats and heaters get cranked up. Long trip busses are simply a no go
-Girls start dressing like my grandmother (and she's been dead for 20 years)
-Choruses of "oh,chuwa!. Chuwayo?" ad nauseum
-Students bring blankets to class and pretend they're dying
-Pavements are covered with ice for 3 months

OTOH-are there seasonal drinks to look out for? Any drinks made with the autumn rice?

I don't understand Koreans inability to adapt to cold weather. They live in a fairly colder climate, you'd think they'd be able to stand it a little better. I've literally seen some teachers with heaters at point blank on them in March and April. When winter rolls around, they do everything you said. Talk about how cold it is pretend it's the end of the world.

I will disagree on one point though. While the girls will layer up quite a bit, fall and winter is the official "mini skirts and tall socks/boots" weather. They'll have 4 shirts and 2 coats on, but they still need to show off those gorgeous thighs. I'm not complaining, I'm just saying...

I think it may be something biological. They do sweat in the summer, but not as much as we do. But they seem simply incapable of handling the slightest bit of cold. I crank my classroom temp down to 18 degrees, daily. Without fail, even the hottest day of the year "Ah teacher, so cold." Yesterday they all made a mad dash for their sweaters before coming in and all I had was the window open. It's just something I don't understand or even see as logical. Koreans are Mongolians. A people that live in some of the coldest climates on Earth. They've been on this mountainous peninsula for centuries, yet the first stiff breeze of the year makes them freeze to death.

Any other insights on this?

Fall reminds me of ninjas...

I imagine getting jumped by some ninjas camouflaged in the autumn leaves and they are packing some kind of heat... probably ninja stars as they are ninjas...

Maybe I watched too many anime samurai movies in my youth during the autumn months and it fiddled with my perception of reality.

Ah... autumn is anime season

I sometimes think its a cultural thing and not a biological one. Although complaining and having weaknesses are frowned upon here (much like the rest of the world), griping about the cold seems culturally acceptable. I'm a Korean that was born and raised in Southern California and was blessed with living in an area with nice warm weather year round. However, I've never had any issues with the cold and go snowboarding every chance I get. Strangely though, every time I visited my relatives in Korea during the winter, my aunts and cousins would constantly complain about how cold it was and how they were shocked that someone living in warm weather dealt with the cold better than a native. My friends told me they experienced the same when they got back from trips as well. Quite a small sample size but its just my opinion.

As far as biological reasons, although I have no idea how well the Chinese and Japanese deal with the cold, the small and thin build of asians in general might have something to do with Koreans' inability to deal with the cold.

What Koreans lack in cold tolerance, they make up for in heat tolerance. I've never seen people so resistant to heat in my life. In the winter it's seriously 85 degrees in my office, it feels like a damn jimjilbang in here! And try riding a bus in the winter without taking your coat off!

Also, I know a few Chinese people who live here in Korea and they are also amazed at Koreans' extreme heat tolerance and lack of cold tolerance.
