I just re-signed my contract and he's afraid I won't come back for some reason. My co-teacher patiently explained to him that a. I wouldn't have re-signed the contract if I wasn't coming back -- I could have just left and b. I miss my family and there's no clause in the contract that allows for paying off home leave.
Good grief. |

We didn't get to the talking numbers stage. He just wanted to know if it was possible. And it's not.
I've taken a stand about almost nothing at my school thus far, but they've see a different side to me about my home leave. Swine flu? Tough cookies. In the middle of the semester? That's too bad.
This one thing I won't budge on, as a foreign teacher. I miss my family, and have the right to see them at least once a year..... |

Bargain,
take the cash, and an extra week or two or three paid vacation for the end of the semester, and then go home. |

Nah. I'm ready to go home, which surprised me. Plus I've got a new baby nephew to meet. I don't want to wait any longer. Also, my mother would catch a Korean Air flight just to kill me if I canceled at this point. |

Picasso I am very surprised you are being allowed home leave during the semester. It was my understanding that the contract states fairly clearly that this is to be taken when school is not officially in session (at least my contract states this)
If it were me, I'd wait until Jan and take it then and get a bunch of other concessions on top of it, ala tenchu
have you looked at your contract? |

He's worried about you going overseas and catching swine flu? What a laugh... it's all over Korea... didn't they just eclipse their 10,000th case? That argument is long, long gone. |

My contract states that home leave is to be taken during the last two weeks of the contract term. The school may 'ask' me to wait until vacation time, but my school wouldn't force me to do that. And if they did, after I've made a number of concessions to accommodate the school's needs (including not pressing the issue of going abroad during summer vacation, and missing out on a vacation in Vietnam), I think I'd basically tell them that I was going home during the time that the contract suggests, and whether I was coming back or not was up to them.
I have a little weight to throw around at the moment as I just got a very high review on my open class, and a few other things have recently added to my favor as well. My VP mostly doesn't give a crap about English and just wants to deal with it as little as possible, so it's more convenient for him to just give me what I want here than to have to go through the trouble of finding another foreign teacher anyway. |

Actually, my school has been really excellent to me and didn't actually tell me I couldn't go abroad for my summer vacation. It was just a discussion with the other teachers, including the head teachers, where they were talking about how it would cause a headache for the P and VP if *they* went abroad, because the OE 'requested' that public school teachers not go, because of H1N1. Any teachers going abroad would have to be reported to the OE, which would make the school look bad -- a sort of lack of loyalty, or what have you. I decided not to go because I didn't like the idea of causing trouble for my school, when they've been really good to me.
But this is a different issue altogether -- it's my home leave, my time with my family.
I had a little meeting with the VP today to finalize my dates, and he just kept saying over and over how he was so afraid I'm not going to come back. He told me if there are any "emergencies", to just call him and let him know -- not to hesitate if I need more time at home with my family for "some reason". It's quite sweet, actually.
Anyway, it's all sorted. And they're even letting me take a later date than I should be able to, so that I can tack on an extra weekend's worth of time. I'm very lucky. |

Yeah, my ct told me that the other day and I was a little floored by the number. Then I realized that there have been 177 deaths from it in my home state (FL) which I had just returned from (self quarratine for a week afterwards in Korea). It kind of put things into perpective. Luckily, noone has been diagnosed at my school with it yet. |

Where does it state the school has to give leave? I thought it was your choice to continue or go home and possibly look for a new school, and then come back. |

Huh? Of course it's your choice if you continue or go home....
But if you choose to sign another contract, in my contract at least, it gives you two weeks (14 days, including weekends) for home leave. The time is supposed to be the last two weeks of my current contract, or during the vacation time at school if my school 'asks' me to wait. |

So, this whole thread is just about some VP worried that you might not come back?
How did he ever get through life without you? |

Knee makes me laugh.
I am guessing they just want to save a couple bucks on the flight vs payoff. If they were really that worried they wouldnt have re-signed as they lose nothing if you go home. Same cost as just ending the contract.
Honestly they could save money as if you just stay home they dont have to pay the one month severance pay.
Odd story. |
