The Devil and Daniel Johnston

Anyone ever listen to this guy?

Some pretty crazy stories in this documentary, especially with the one about him and his Dad in the airplane flying back from one of his concerts.

Yeah, I've listened to him before. That documentary about him is heart-breaking. A good thing to watch. His albums are pretty decent, actually. True, that story about him grabbing the airplane controls and trying to crash the plane was hard to hear, especially from his father who was with him.

Yup. I like his tunes, and loved the documentary.

Saw him perform in Austin, TX a few years ago, and it was pretty sad. He ain't what he used to be. I recommend Songs of Pain and Hi, How Are You for his 80s stuff, and Rejected Unknown for newer material.

I thought the movie was fairly boring and his music/art was awful. Just my opinion.

I wasn't gonna say anything, but since someone mentioned it, yeah. This movie is completely pointless. There are thousands of crazy people like Daniel Johnston who spend all day writing crappy Dylan-esque songs and doodling poorly-drawn superheroes. This guys just gets his 15 minutes for some unknown reason. He's not an artist, he's a statistic.

I guess it's bad that the premise of the movie made me feel more existential than the actual movie did.

Yeah, and someone (i forget who) mentioned during the documentary that sometimes his performances are just horrible.

what I've heard from Hi, How Are You sounds pretty good though. I think of Beck when I hear some of that music.

but is the guy famous for having a mental problem or for his music and drawing - maybe both.

his Dad is scared in that he doesn't know what will happen to his son when he and his wife die. they essentially look after Daniel. maybe his brother will take over.

I've met him a few times. He alternated between being very sweet to being edgy to being hostile and threatening. He's pretty fat now and looking at him you wouldn't guess he was the guy who sang 'Museum of Love.'
