Sorry, I posted this in the wrong forum the first time.
So my school made me sign a new contract 1 month into my job, because they made a 'mistake' on my first one, meaning they would have to pay me for overtime.
They forced me to sign it, I had no money, and now they have been underpaying me for 6 months.
My current plan is to leave them with all my unpaid bills this Sunday, and getting an advance on my October salary and packing up and leaving.
I will be giving them a note telling them why I am doing what I am doing. Terrible working conditions etc. I don't want to give them any notice because they guy they fired to hire me was supposed to get a month's notice, then they fired him and asked me to start the next day.
I know ripping them off makes me just as much of a scumbag as they are, but 2 and a half years in Korea with crap employers for 2 years of my time has been enough for me.
Does anyone know what the consequences are when you are doing a runner while owing money? Would that be a red flag on my passport if I try to get a working visa for Canada?
Any advice would be much appreciated. I appreciate any lectures, but they will fall on death ears. I've had enough of the way this country treats its foreign visitors and employees.

Just curious, why did you stay there for six months after re-signing the contract? Why didn't you take the next months pay and bail outta here?
That sucks about your situation, my sympathies. Do whatever you feel is right. Nobody else can properly judge how awful your employer is. Life is short, nobody can blame you for leaving if you were treated like crap. |

Mr. Susan don't give them a reason why you left. It's so much more torture to them if you just dont say anything and leave. |

My girlfriend was here, and it was too early in the relationship to bail. I needed the money that they actually were paying me. It was an issue of about 250,000 a month they were short changing me on. So, I was still getting a decent wage, just not enough for 11 hour days away from home. |

They have the potential to be a good school, if they put people that understand and care about foreigners in charge. I'd like them to be understand what they are doing wrong, so they can hopefully improve for the next teacher.
The next teacher is going to get a lot of cool stuff I've left for them, provided my school doesn't sell it to get back their losses |

I don't think anything will happen so long as you don't come back to Korea-- or possibly even if you do. Hagwon directors are not as all-powerful as you might think.
If they're screwing you over that badly, I wouldn't feel at all bad about it. |

It's more so Korean immigration I worry about. I figured because I'm applying for a working holiday visa for Canada, some red flags may be raised. |

I doubt they will change their minds really. they are motivated by exploiting customers and employees alike. That's capitalism. im not sure why you want a hagwon that treated you like this to succeed. |

For the sake of the next teacher. A lot of teachers that come here are 22-23 and taking their first jobs after university. Korea can be a nasty place for work, and it's not a very nice experience for these people. I have a lot of experience, and I wont be bothered by it long term, but I imagine that it could damage some younger people. |

Why the hell does everyone refrain from making a formal complaint at the Labor board, Board of education AND immigration.
By running you are just setting another person up for the fall.
Complain to the authorities, enough complaints and they get a visit, enough visits and they loose their license to run a school. |

They didn't force you to sign a new contract. You got strong-armed into signing it, and some Korean felt really proud and enjoyed the ego trip for doing it to you -- guaranteed.
I've been on both ends of it, and you don't need to sign a darn thing. If they fire you, then so what. You can take them to the labor board, secure a new job, and get paid an extra month for the illegal firing. |

I've been here for long enough to know a known evil is better than an unknown evil.
I planned on leaving at the 6 month mark for long enough, and I didn't want the hassle of going through the labour board.... a long stressful situation.
Nothing in Korea happens fast. I didn't want to have to look for a new school in Korea, when I'd only be staying for 5 months.
I'm not interest in opinions about staying with this school, I've been with them for 6 months now. If this was 5 months ago, then sure, I'd consider your advice.
All the point of this thread was, was to see what consequences can happen from pulling a runner. I posted about the situation so people could just give me the information I need instead of giving me advice on labour boards etc. |
