Like the title of this thread reads, what should I do with my new internet connection? I just had SK Broadband installed in my officetel room.
I tested the connection by downloading a trailer from Apple and got about 12mb/s down. I also tried a few private torrent trackers and those were similarly fast.
What do you guys do with all this speed? I'm tempted to get back into Usenet (Giganews + Newzleech + Grabit--great combo).
The only gripe I have is that Megaupload has been a huge disappointment. I bought a premium lifetime membership only to discover that I top out at about 800kb/s and average 400kb/s. WHY!?!? Soooo lame. |

heh..
I also have a usenet membership, Easynews (and since I own an apple, I use Unison as the newsreader) that and War 3 games have never come along so well (lag is at a minimum)
Downloads are key- something like 1.5mb/s up to 3,4mb. Hope it just gets faster |

I've been on usenet for about 8 years now. The speeds from Korea are just so sick its a shame NOT to be on usenet. I use giganews. I used to use a couple of the other ones posted, but I find giganews to be the best. |

But seriously, grab a Usenet account and set up an FTP for your mates back home. But seriously put porn on it. |

LOL. I love the reaction of guys when they first get a real Korean 100mb/sec connection! 10MB/sec downloads rock!
Have fun with it! Private trackers FTW! |

Private trackers can be a pain if there aren't a lot of people geographically close to you. Bittorrent does this thing where if a seed is geographically closer than another they get preference. Half the time I upload something to a private tracker, as soon as other seeds appear, my upload drops from 100KB to 0KB because the guy who just made seed is in the US and so are all the other leechers.
it has been consistent across dozens of torrents. Even downloading torrents, my upload often does nothing even though there are tons of leechers. |

Wow, using Usenet is expensive. Is it really worth $30 a month for unlimited?
Also, can your activity be tracked on Usenet? Are the Feds going to find out about the terabytes of media that I download there with a 1 year membership? |

Geography seems to matter a lot with torrents.
When I download something that is popular (presumably with GIs or English teachers) in Korea I get amazing download speeds. I downloaded "Crossing the Line" when it came out in about 3 minutes for 750mb with a torrent. With shows like The Office, Entourage, The Daily Show etc. I also get amazing downloads. If I'm downloading something which isn't the "in" thing with foreigners in Korea though the speed can kind of suck. A while back when I tried out emule again I got the kind of speeds I remembered from 1999 haha. In general, I find that if something has been recommended on Dave's I get amazing download speeds. |

While I can see a benefit in some situations, I can't imagine that a swarm is completely 100% maxed out and my 100 KB can't contribute at all to it.
I'm sure there is more than 1 leecher there who would happily take another 100 KB on top of their speed. My ratio has been taking a beatinig on a couple private torrent sites since I've come here. There doesn't seem to be much I can do about it. |

Yeah I have the same problem, I sit there with MBs worth of upload speed being unused because all of the other pers are overseas, watching my ratio go to pieces.
I'm also curious as to how newsgroups are worth the money... |

To those wondering whether or not Newsgroups are worth the money...
For UP to $30 a month (+ any fees you might be paying for a premium NZB search site), you get consistent, obscenely fast speeds. Even back in the states I was getting 3mb down and I had a second tier connection with Cox Communications.
So I guess it would be all about how you'd use Usenet. It was worth it for me at the time because I archive whatever I download. I probably got 90 1080p rips in a 2 month period. Or, you can use it as a replacement for Korean cable TV. I would recommend checking out a website like Newzleech to see what is available that you would be interested in.
The good part is, most server providers offer free 2 week trials and discout the first 2 months greatly with no obligation to continue. So try it out!
You'll need a News Provider (websites like Giganews), a website where you can download NZB files (websites like Newzbin, Newzleech, or Binsearch), and a client to download them--AKA a newsreader (I'd recommend Grabit).
EDIT: Oh yeah, no ratios to worry about. You're downloading direct from high-speed servers. No dealing with any peers so there's also minimal risk. |

I do miss the newsgroups. I'm seriously thinking about joining up again since I do have unused bandwidth at my disposal. So Grabit and Giganews is the way to go? What's the best NZB site out there? I normally used Newzbin. |

Giganews for sure would be the absolute best at what they do. A lot of competitors have degraded in quality--in terms of sending out a bunch of bad packets and stuff.
I personally vouch for Grabit. I haven't really tested out other clients because I was so pleased with it.
Well, I usually use free NZB sites but I figured paying for a premium one is really not that much money to add to my Giganews service so I checked out Newzbin. Unfortunately, they are now invite only. So I'm going to sign up with NZB Matrix soon. It's approx. $10 or 7 pounds for a LIFETIME account. I've also heard many good things about NZB Matrix.
Hope that helps. |

I still don't see the problem with private trackers...
I can get all the new U.S. TV in 720p within minutes. New HD Movies...whatchya talkin' about....7-9MB/s. I guess me being in Korea, I'm "geographically close" to EVERYONE!!
Usegroups...haven't used them, but they seem like they're for chumps. Why pay for something just as fast (or as fast as need be if you don't want to debate exact speeds) that's free and less hassle IMHO. |
