I have heard that instead of a plane ticket home, you can instead get the equivalent in money to then travel onward somewhere else. Is this true? I have a contract for a public school position, and they will only pay for my plane ticket back home if I leave Korea within 10 days after completing my contract. Standard?

Any insight is greatly appreciated!

Who are you working through? My GEPIK contract states I simply get an allowance to pay for my flights. Where I choose to go with that money, I'm not sure if they care...?

I am working with a recruiter and the position is for Kwanyang Elementary School in Anyang, therefore making it a GEPIK position I suppose. The contract states the following:

a.Employee from outside of Korea: A one-way ticket to Korea will be reimbursed within a month(30 days) from working at the school. Upon completion of Contract, one-way trip to the airport of return for his/her home country will be reimbursed when the trip occurs within the first 10 days as of termination of employment.

Is it not standard for GEPIK to provide an allowance like EPIK does? I will only accept a contract that provides an allowance, because I want to travel after my contract is up. I have asked the recruiter to find out if the school is willing to modify this detail, but haven't heard back from her yet...

Ummmm, either I'm reading this wrong or this is badly worded, because to me it seems to say that you have to pay for your trip home, and if you do go, they will reimburse you later?

That's can't be right. Am I reading it wrong or is it worded badly?

You will have to pay for the ticket up front, then they reimburse you after you give them a receipt.
The GEPIK contract is worded that way so they only have to pay for the flight with nothing extra (and the cheapest flight or most direct through Korean Air).
Other contracts I've had/seen have allowed up to 1.3 million won allowance. That way you could take your flight here, finish a year then go somewhere else with some pocket change.

p.s.--

According to my recruiter the school now says they're willing to provide airfare to another country. Shouldn't they change that in the contract too? (They didn't, and that makes me skeptical... as well as the fact that they will "reimburse" me for the airfare after completion of the contract).

thanks.

I leave next month and they bought me a ticket to Indonesia instaed of Canada. If they can get you a cheaper ticket then flying to your home country they won't argue.
