I have a trip planned for Phuket for early next year, and I have started doing the research now.
One thing I have noticed is that things are a lot more expensive than I expected. Hotels for 3000-5000 baht a night, and the sort. Travel guides warning me about overpriced taxis and tuk-tuks. I always thought Thailand would be cheap. Though I accepted that any tourist place would be about double the price of regular Thailand.
Can anyone recommend a modest hotel (1000-2000 baht a night) with a good location?
Oh, and if you are going to recommend me go somewhere else, please save it. The plan is set and the tickets are paid for. I am sure there are better places out there but I just want to make the best of Phuket that I can. |

Are you just checking in the Patong area or have you checked out Krabi/Nai harn/Rawai. Really it depends on what you are going there for. You should probably wait because if you show up in person the prices of the hotels is a lot cheaper. They also say they are fully booked and when you go there nobody is staying there. |

Here's one that I stay at in Kata beach, about 15 kilometers from Patpong. (900~1200 baht a night). Kata and Karen have beautiful beaches and lots to do day and night without the craziness of patpong, yet is only 15 minutes away if you want to check out the madness.
http://phuketdir.com/gardenhome/ It's not special but as you can see has a lovely garden and nice pool with average rooms. Very relaxing.
There's another place called Little Mermaid with pool and some very nice rooms about 2 minutes from the above starting at around 1000 a night. Google Little Mermaid (Kata Beach) there are other little mermaids. Should reserve at both for high season.
Both are about 6 minute walks from the Beach
I like phuket. It's a large island with much more to offer than Patpong: many beautiful beaches(try Nai Harn beach), small communities, tons of restaurants of all nationalities, lots of night life(wholesome and otherwise).
Although I'm not recommending it, i usually rent a little 125cc motor bike for about $5 a day. It saves on the Tuk tuks and makes the whole island accessible. Be warned though that hundreds of drunk and sober foreigners are killed a year in Thailand on these bikes.
Also don't expect a "real Thailand experience" in Phuket. It's more pseudo European resort like but on a budget. Still a nice convenient place to chill. Be safe and Enjoy. |
