| My boss is breaking my contract 2 months before the end. He has given me 4 week notice and I have to be out of my apartment 2 days after I finish school. He says he can't afford to pay me anymore but he didn't say that he is closing the school. I am going to ask him tomorrow if he is going to close the school. He is not going to pay me severance and said he would "try" to support me with a plane ticket back, although I don't want to go home. What can I do? He is completely screwing up my plans by breaking the contract. I know this happens a lot but is there anything I can do? |

| this happens a lot. Stay put and wait for some more advice. Go complain to the labor board in the mean time. |

| same advice as above....get your documentation ready...dismissal notice and the like....make sure you are not being replaced by a new teacher cause that would pretty much destroy the financial release excuse. |

| so far it seems like you aren't getting severance or flight ticket. I'd actually check with the tax and pension office to see if he even paid either of those. That really sucks. |

In order to evaluate your situation, we should ask:
How many other teachers are at the school, Korean and foreign?
How many students do you teach? How many do others teach? How many does the school have? Has the number of students fallen lately?
It could really be financial trouble. Many families have cut back on hogwans, many businesses have failed and many hogwans are in trouble or have closed as a result.
If your boss is giving you one month notice as required by law, and if you are paid and you get airfare which he is not required to pay, you are doing pretty well, especially if the school is having financial trouble.
If your boss is just pulling an eleventh month firing a month early, then that's a different story. |

Right on target.
I would add that if your school is truly in financial dire straits that your boss may be doing what he can to help you out. That is possible and its not just about srewing up your plans....
Schools do go out of business these days.
Like the advice you got before: get your papers in order and wait and see. If you get nothing, go to the labour board. If you get your final pay and airfare and see that the school is broke...going after them will yield you nothing as you can't get water from a dried up well now can you? |
