I'm just curious how many of you have had confirmed swine flu cases at the schools you work for.

I work at a big chain hagwon, and yesterday we were informed that one of our students has the swine flu. My first reaction was sheer joy because I thought this meant I could get a week off work. But they said they will just cancel that class for a week.

I know it's a hagwon and they're typically all about the money, but this school is different, so I was surprised that they were not shutting our small branch down for quarantine. If you've had H1N1 cases at your school, or heard of them....what happened? I thought it was standard that the school would close for a week. Is it not?

P.S. I was being 20% sarcastic about my first reaction to the news. The kid is going to be ok.

A third grade girl at my PS had swine flu. She had mandatory home quarantine (as well as her brother who was not sick and in 6th grade). The school didn't close and the clsas wasn't cancelled. Although, the local school board voted on it i think. That was two weeks ago, and she is now back at school.

Kids had it at my PS. We're still up and running. It goes by a school to school basis. My principal is a workaholic so we're still coming to school. Not one day shutdown or leaving early. Just more disgusting ajumma dirt water cleandowns and posters about 신중프.

PS with 1,350 Ss. One misdiagnosed flu case a few weeks ago. School closed last week anyway.
I 've hardly any classes this week as teachers try to catch up before the mid-terms. It is not probable that winter vacation will be set back a week as maybe some schools may do.

One guy in my lab apparently has the swine flu. His desk is right behind me but no one told me about it before I asked why he has been away all week. Then they told me he had the swine flu and that I have to go by the department office and test my temperature once a day from now on.

PS Academic High School - 1800 students.

Literally dozens of cases at my school....they are sending kids home daily here, yet we're not closing down. With this many cases it seems retarded, quite frankly, to keep the school open as we undoubtedly have kids who are currently infected, yet still asymptomatic, in classes and at school busily infecting even more students and teachers.

I think if a teacher goes down with it they might consider closing down.

Two third graders at my school. My class with them has been shifted to Friday. I will have to teach it in their homeroom. The class doesn't move anywhere, but otherwise business as usual.

]. Swine flu is just going to go in circles in our schools. Their stupid rules about no travelling abroad during Chuseok does nothing. Nice to have soap and hand sanitizers. Not to say anybody really uses them. The ridiciulous one digital thermometer for an entire school without sterilization is another gem. This flu is here to stay.

Shutting the school down once someone has come down with Swine Flu is really pretty ridiculous as you are contagious for a couple days before you display symptoms, which gives enough time to infect the whole school before it closes. I'm betting that once enough people here get Swine Flu and realize it isn't any worse than seasonal flu, schools will not only not be shut down, but students will continue coming to school sick as they have always done here. In my area it seems to be really hit or miss as to whether schools close when there is a Swine Flu case, but once the weather gets cold there will probably be a more steady stream of new cases. I'm guessing the schools will realize that they can't close indefinitely and life will go on as normal (well except for those few immunocompromised people who would probably die from any case of the flu).

I teach the afterschool program at a public school and I found that one of my students had swine flu. She was sent home from her normal classes yet she kept coming to the afterschool classes Rolling Eyes

My co-teacher and I only found out a week after she was better, most of the korean teachers knew apparently.

There were a couple new cases this morning in my second class. 2 students missing...
