I've always thought music should offer variety. Serious. Light. Sentimental. Romantic. Erotic.

I'm not dissing the guys: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LbAaLdLguLo&feature=related

Is that Chuck Berry introducing the second video?

Do The Go-Gos and Bangles count as girl-bands?

Good list. If you can find Ed Sullivan DVDs these girl bands seemed to be on the show a lot.

The newer ones count too.

Bangles: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLzrRAs8fdc

Go-Gos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9nqCM8Ito8&feature=related

All Saints has such a classic sound I at first thought they were covering Motown songs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xs6uFtAozko

Laugh if you will. I liked the Spice Girls: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhkLKsr_NsE

I'm hearing you on these oldies singer groups.

There's also decent all- or mostly chick bands from the 80's:
Bangles
Go-gos
Bananarama

early 90's:
Babes in Toyland
Bikini Kill
L7

2000s:
Le Tigre
Tegan and Sarah
Sleater-Kinney
The Donnas

And some that I don't care for who should nonetheless be considered for the list:

Dixie Chicks
Spice Girls
Indigo Girls
Corrs

Rather different from those awesome girl groups of the 60s, but these days I enjoy listening to the Hot Toddies. They're hilarious.

Interesting thread. I wikied girl groups & it's thin soup. Ronettes, Chiffons, Dixie Cups etc. I got a tingle from their songs when I was a kid & their songs were all over AM radio but Brill Street & Specter's wall of sound dont wear time so well.

All-time till now, I'd say Indigo Girls hands down. I went looking for the best youtube link & couldnt choose, I got captivated by too many. Check them out if you dont know them. Awesome harmonizing, great lyrics, genius melodies, & a substantial body of work.

Their way was paved by (imho) the greatest musician of my lifetime, the woman who largely pioneered the concept of singing songs she herself wrote, Joni Mitchell.
