|
|
I was home over the summer (U.S.) and people were already getting very hyped up over this movie called Twilight. At the time, I just thought.. whatever... another film for people with a vampire fettish...
So apparently this movie has premiered back home as of last week and people are in fact, going nuts. A friend of mine has recently returned to Korea from CA and she can't shutup about it. She says she watched it 4 times before flying back here. What's strange to me is that people who I never really pictured getting into that kind of thing seem to be completely obsessed with this film and its story.
One thing I love about Koreans is that they don't seem to embrace this dark fantasy stuff as much as westerners do, but since the reaction at home to this movie seems quite similar to what happened during the Titanic and Star Wars movie premiers, I am wondering if the same will happen when and if it's released here. If this movie gains an obsessive following in the states and other western countries, will Koreans take part in it too?

I am in CA as well, but I am also very much in touch with Asian pop culture.
There is a very popular manga/anime from Japan called "Vampire Knight" with a similar premise to "Twilight" (human teenage female in love with a 1000 year old sexy vampire) but with a stronger, darker and more intricate plot (Bram Stoker would be proud!). I don't know how it is doing in Korea (it is showing strong ratings in Japan and via the 'net in the USA), but it would not surprise me if some of the vampire hysteria from VK spilled over into "Twilight."
P.S. IMHO, "Vampire Knight" is a much better crafted story than "Twilight" (the writing craftmanship of the book sucks a##!). I haven't seen the movie yet because of all the screaming preteen fangirls, but i will when the hysteria calms down.
EDIT for post-Thanksgiving bad typing (too many dishes!)

I never saw the appeal of this franchise, but I remember seeing how the books were selling like hotcakes. As a writer, I pay more attention to that sort of thing than others, but for some reason it's always bothered me whenever I saw that some young adult book was becoming the national bestselling franchise. I mean, Harry Potter I understood, mainly because it had that fantastical element that everyone identified with, even though I wasn't personally a fan of ANYTHING Harry Potter. But I've started to notice a worrying trend in the United States where young adult books are becoming the mainstream kind of book, which is making me wonder if it's starting to appeal to the fact that US citizens are generally not as intelligent as they should be, especially when it comes to reading.
I mean, I know the numbers are already against us as fewer and fewer people in the United States are reading novels these days. So I wonder if this is just a natural digression. |

i saw a bit of the movie on surfthechannel.com (before it was removed), and it looks pretty good, i'm planning on seeing it. but i'm kind of surprised that there was such a craze about its opening in north america. i guess there must be a lot of fans of the book |

I think Harry Potter came at the right time. Fantasy can be a fun genre but a lot of adults have been turned off by the "geekiness" factor of it. But Harry Potter was something they could read to their kids and also enjoy themselves . As the series aged, the content was not as childlike so it could keep the older readers interested. Once Harry Potter opened the door, it allowed other fantasy books to follow. The difference was that these were not as "hardcore" as others. Like in Twilight, the protagonist is a regular high school girl, so "normal" high schoolers/middle schoolers could read it without feeling like a sci-fi/fantasy geek. It's like fantasy-lite.
Anyway, I can't stand Twilight. The writing and characterization is a joke. |

Well, you'll find out soon enough.
From the IMDB Twilight page:

My question is more related to this whole cult following of vampires that seems to exist in the states and possibly other western countries.
I have never been able to understand why people are so facinated by this kind of thing but to each his own... Koreans may be entertained by it but I've not noticed any kind of weird infatuation with vampires, werewolves etc... in the two years that I've been here. |

Are you a teenage girl? That seems to be the only group that is going nuts over this movie. Also, Korean girls aren't the same as North American girls, so who is to say that this movie will have the same effect? I doubt it will. |
